Sad news of newborn baby found in a trash compactor.

A newborn baby found outside a Washington, apartment building late Friday is in stable condition, police tell PEOPLE.

The building’s maintenance supervisor was preparing to start the trash compactor when she heard a baby crying, KOMO News reported.

The woman called 911 and climbed into the compactor to search for the source of the cries.

“In a dress, she dove into the garbage compactor and began pulling out bags of garbage, trying to search for this thing,” the woman’s boyfriend, Jeff Meyers, told the news station.

Officers found the newborn boy and he was immediately transported to a hospital for medical attention, according to the Everett Police Department.

The newborn infant was covered in blood and his umbilical cord was still attached. There was no indication of when or why the baby was left in the dumpster.

“Thank God Paula didn’t hit that button,” Meyers said. “I mean, had that baby not cried one second before she hit that button, we’d be out here for a much worse story.”

“Someone had the baby and just discarded it into the garbage,” he continued. “It’s the saddest and sickest thing I’ve seen in my entire life.”

The baby was rushed to the hospital where he remains in stable condition, Officer Aaron Snell tells PEOPLE.

In Washington, individuals may freely drop off unharmed babies at any fire station or emergency room with no questions asked under the Safe Haven law. There is a fire station just half a mile from where the baby was found.

  • After reading Call the Midwife series by Jennifer Worth, it was clear that anyone is able to create a baby despite intelligence, finance, love and so on. I only hope that these babies were not a product of rape.

  • How terribly sad. The mother must have been in a really bad place. More support is needed for pregnant women who are struggling.

  • So very sad. So many people unable to have children who would gladly adopt these babies, they don’t need to be treated like this :,(

  • OMG, thank God the baby cried, and thank God the driver heard it. This is such a sad story. And yes, more needs to be done for people to feel safe in leaving their baby somewhere. Surprisingly, this had a fairly happy ending with the baby surviving, when there was a greater chance it would not.

  • ig campaign LEAVE YOUR BABY HERE IF YOU CANNOT CARE FOR IT, IT’S OK. THISSOUNDS SILLY BUT IF AT CHURCHES AND WELFARE AGENCIES AND SUCH, IT MIGHT HELP THIS AWFUL THING/THINGS HAPPENING. Please note I put no judgement just a hope that person would do it rather than the sickening alternatives mentioned. Something wrong when these things happen, mental state comes to mind, so have to treat with care. Not frighten the child disposer if a disorder present, I also agree with other methods being used, thank god baby /babies found before they were distroyed. Has to be more education on If you cannot cope or are afraid and alone contact us… without discrimination i m more concerned with saving baby than punishing offender at this early stage. Upset me greatly as so many would be want to be mums who cannot concieve and these are being thrown away like trash… Are we Human beings something should and miust be done

  • How someone can do this?! There are so many options! If she didn’t want the baby why did she not dropped the baby in someone’s door?! A lot of people struggle to have a baby and you see this heartbreak situation. It is revolting!

  • No excuse for this heartless action, especially with the laws that are in place in Washington.

  • Oh my!! If that woman hadn’t heard the baby, she would have pressed the button indeed! How can a mother do such a thing? Thinking that there was a fire station so close by? So sad!!
