Nicole Kidman has admitted that her old-fashioned parenting rules often make her less than popular with her daughters Sunday and Faith. USA Today reports that the Aussie actress is determined to keep her children as grounded as possible, despite their life in the public eye, and has the full support of her musician husband Keith Urban.

Setting Boundaries

Nicole says that ensuring her girls stay off social media is central to her set of parenting rules. “They don’t have a phone and I don’t allow them to have Instagram,” she said of ten-year-old Sunday and eight-year-old Faith. “I try to keep some sort of boundaries.” Nicole believes her own upbringing and a strong belief in God has also influenced her parenting style. “I had a very Catholic grandmother and I was raised praying so that had a massive impact,” she said. “I wouldn’t say it’s absolutism…tolerance is the most important thing.” The family are known to attend church regularly as Nicole believes it reiterates to her girls the importance of not judging others.

Living The Southern Life

Living in Nashville, Nicole is reported to be a typical Southern mum in many ways. Both her children take music lessons, with Faith playing the violin and Sunday favouring the piano. Nicole also has frequent conversations with her daughters about the importance of female independence and empowerment, and the absence of this in many global communities. “We’re trying to educate about those things,” she said. “But it’s giving information gently and then guiding.”

While we’re not sure how long Nicole is going to be able to shield her girls from the lure of social media, we have to admire her determination to make them aware of their responsibilities and raise them in line with her own values and beliefs.

Nicole seems that she would be a very good parent.

  • parents are supposed to be unpopular aren’t we? we’re supposed to be parents, not friends. and that means setting boundaries.

  • Unpopular with her children but most parents have to be unpopular with their kids at some point.

  • Unpopular but safe for her kids

  • We too are an old fashioned family. My 14yo daughter still doesn’t have a mobile phone, she is the only kid in her year level that doesn’t have one.!

  • I totally support and parent my child the same way. Just to note, social media is not for kids under 13 years of age so she is actually parenting versus so many who allow their kids online before this age. Interesting so many would take issue with that. Good on her, I say. Kids do need routine and boundaries and to be told No a lot more than I feel they currently are. Parents need to parent, not be their child’s friend.

  • Not sure how long she will be able to keep this up but I agree with her parenting wholeheartedly.

  • This is such a tricky topic because social media is still so new. We haven’t really had a generation go through life with it yet.

  • Social media can affect mental health negatively in adults as it is, so I agree with her kids not being allowed it.

  • We follow a lot of these sorts of rules too. I think it teaches respect, resilience, and other values we think are essential.

  • No social media and technology is a good thing

  • I agree with no social media, much healthier, and if that is her choice of religion well it is better than Scientology.

  • Sounds like good rules to me – children copy what their parents do and say and are better for it.

  • Good on you Nicole and Keith for supporting her. You are on the right track with them. Train a child up in the way they should go and when they are old they will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6. That’s good parenting.
