The federal government’s no-jab-no-pay laws will remove childcare benefits, rebates and the Family Tax Benefit A end-of-year supplement from parents who don’t immunise their children.

The changes start on January 1, 2016, with exemptions for medical reasons, after legislation passed the Senate on Monday.

Liberal Democrats Senator David Leyonhjelm, speaking in support of the measures, said childless families should not have to subsidise the lifestyles of those who choose to have “little blighters”.

In fact, most welfare payments for parents should be abolished,  said Senator Leyonhjelm.

“The government is not your parent or your spouse – get over it.”

He thanked and apologised to childless Australians.

Any parent wishing to dispute a finding that they had not vaccinated their child would have a minimum of two weeks to provide documentary evidence before payments were affected.

  • I think this is great, we should all be vaccinating our children

  • I like this law it’s great

  • Excellent news. I dnt think the majority of children should be put at risk because some parents choose not to vaccinate. If their is legitimate reason for not vaccinating then each to their own but implementing changes that would have monetary affect will encourage parents who forget or put off vaccinating to make it a priority.

  • I think this is a great idea and the government should be congratulated on it. On a side note I wonder now how many new daycare centres now will pop up soon allowing the non vax kids to attend (as per the news 30/11/15). I shudder to think of this.

  • woah, woah, woah! so the issue is about vax but then there is basically an attack towards people who have kids? my tax and hubby’s tax, would be getting spent on heaps of things that don’t necessarily benefit me BUT my community benefits .

  • ok so this is good that people who dont vaccinate get penalised for it, but what happens in regards to enrollments in schools and playgroups etc. I had to prove to my daugher’s schools that they had been immunised before they could attend. For all the children that dont get immunised do they still get accepted into schools? – sorry slightly off point but I can’t seem to find an answer.

  • This is fantastic news. I hope the the only exception is for medical reasons ONLY. I do not believe religious and/or cultural reasons are enough to put our children at risk.

  • Something to congratulate the government on. Don’t want to be political but this mob isn’t doing too bad. This is a very good piece of legislation.
