We are going absolute nutty over this new research which suggests that men who consume lots of nuts will enjoy enhanced sex drive, increased sexual desire and stronger orgasms.
The Spanish project, called Fertinuts, studied 100 young, healthy men, half of whom were asked to eat at least 60 grams of mixed raw nuts a day for 14 weeks, while the other half continued with their regular diet, avoiding nut products as much as possible.
Prior and after the study, the volunteers had to answer detailed questionnaires and their blood was also screened for levels of nitric oxide (NO) and E-selectin, two naturally produced molecules, as reported in Gizmodo.
Researchers then used the levels of NO and E-selectin to measure the health of the blood vessels in the penis that make erections possible.
Improved Sexual Prowess
Before the study, the screening showed no major differences in the two groups. However, after the two weeks, the scientists discovered that the nut-eating volunteers showed a significant increase in their “orgasmic function” and sex drive.
In addition, this nut-loving group also experienced improved sperm quality, quantity, and function.
“In conclusion, our study suggests that compliance with a healthy diet supplemented with mixed nuts may help to improve erectile and sexual desire,” the authors wrote in the journal Nutrition.
This is not an isolated study about the link between nuts and sexual prowess. In fact, an earlier study found that eating 100 grams of pistachios a day for three weeks could improve the erections of men with pre-existing erectile malfunctions.
Take This With A Handful Of Salted Nuts
However, we have to be a little skeptic, as the research results showed that despite the improvements in sexual prowess, levels of NO and E-selectin didn’t actually change at all for either group. Which leaves us wondering how this all actually came about.
One theory could be that since the men knew they were eating nuts, maybe their self-reported boost in sexual prowess was actually a placebo effect, not a biological change to the body caused by nut consumption.
We also can’t ignore that the study was funded partly by Big Nut, the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC), which is an industry group of more than 800 nut and dried fruit companies across the world.
So while we shouldn’t dismiss the results completely, perhaps we shouldn’t expect our partners to turn into sexual stallions after stuffing themselves with nuts.
