A New Zealand mother fears thieves may accidentally eat her son’s placenta, after a recent burglary.

Loralie Burns, who had recently moved within the Auckland suburb of Sunnyvale, received a phone call from her former landlord advising her of the theft on Saturday.

The 35-year-old’s washing machine and fridge-freezer, which had not yet been relocated to her new property, were emptied out during the break-in.

Some meat that was due to be throw out was stolen as well as a blue container holding the precious organ.

“My mind’s still blown,” Burns told Stuff.

“In the freezer there was some meat that was supposed to go in the rubbish, and a plastic container that has my placenta in it.”

“I hope to God I get it back, and I hope no one eats it – that would torment me for a long time,” she told the publication.

The mum had kept the placenta from her five-month-old son, Dante, for sentimental value. She was hoping to bury the organ “somewhere really special.”

She has since taken to Facebook in the hopes of having the stolen placenta returned.

“Please to whoever went through my old house … and felt the need to take the meat from the freezer. PLEASE return the item in the blue Tupperware container as it is my son’s placenta,” she wrote.

“I don’t care how it comes back, I don’t need to know who, just please get it back to me asap!!”

She added: “If you know someone who brought home a few roasts last night please check your freezers.”

In New Zealand’s Māori culture, there is an ancient practice of burying the placenta after birth. Read more about it HERE.

  • The thief/s probably don’t know what they’ve taken. They maybe wouldn’t care either – may even think it’s a “joke”. They may have even hidden some of the meat etc under bushes to collect a few hours later. I have heard of thieves throwing food – perishables out of the fridge and food out of the freezer all through a house. Apparently people have frozen money to hide it. Police told a work colleague that they have even found chairs thrown through the interior of brick veneer homes – sometimes still stuck in the walls. Maybe they vandalise houses they don’t find what they are looking for in.

  • I can imagine this is upsetting. Hope she gets it back.
Personally I wouldn’t feel appealed to eat someone else placenta, but then they may not realise.

  • We had meat stolen from an outside freezer at one of our old houses years ago. We couldn’t get the chest freezer through the door, so it lived on an enclosed back verandah. Thankfully nothing else taken. Its interesting reading about the practice of burying the placenta, not something I had thought about before. I do hope this mum gets some peace of mind.

  • wow why would people even steal stuff from a freezer, black market frozen meat surely doesn’t raise much cash!

I hope that she gets the placenta back so she can carry out her tradition/wish.

    • Sadly I have seen other articles with the same thing occurring – I agree it is odd – but it does happen.

  • What a truly bizarre story. I hope for her sake she gets it back as she is very distraught, but sadly I doubt she will ????
