What better tip to give a mum, than how to keep her kids healthy and maintain a healthy heart from a young age? With 400,000[i] Australians unaware of their heart disease risk, National Heart Week is a great time to kick-start simple lifestyle changes, both for you and your family.

Given the growing body of scientific research proving the many health benefits of omega-3 essential fatty acids, we know that fish oil is important in the diet, but are we giving our family enough of it?

In a recent study undertaken by the Harvard School of Public Health and University of Washington[ii], it was revealed that adequate omega-3 levels could add an extra two-plus years to our lifespan.

In addition to supporting heart health, fish oil has been shown to help improve children’s cognitive development and to help reduce the symptoms of behavioural disorders in children, for example ADD and ADHD.

National Heart Week focuses on improving the heart health of all Australians. Unfortunately, many Australians do not follow the Heart Foundation’s recommendation to consume two to three serves of oily fish per week. For those Australians who do not receive the recommended intake of omega-3 from their diet, supplementation can provide the ideal solution.

When it comes to choosing fish oil supplements, it’s difficult to know which one is right for you. You may consider questions such as, ‘will it taste bad?’, ‘how often do I have to take it?’  or ‘will my kids eat it?’Whether you choose a fish oil supplement in liquid form or soft gel, making an informed choice will ensure a better experience in terms of efficacy, dosage, compliance and planetary impact.

The key to purchasing the most effective omega-3 supplement is to look for the one supported by the most scientific testing and evidence. Any responsible fish oil manufacturer will commission an independent testing organization who does not benefit financially from the test results to test their product. So purchase from a reputable company that has an excellent track record with independent testing. Exceptional freshness should be evident by a good taste, and be sure to choose a supplement that uses only natural flavourings and preservatives.

It has been proven that omega-3 essential fatty acids, found in fish, can significantly support heart health and may guard against cardiovascular disease[iii]. Make a positive change for you and your family this Heart Week, and enhance your well-being with omega-3.
