France’s education minister announced that mobile phones will be banned from primary, junior, and middle schools, calling it a matter of “public health.”

While phones are already prohibited in classrooms in France, starting in September 2018 students won’t be allowed to use them on breaks, at lunch, or between lessons either.

“These days, the children don’t play at break time anymore,” Jean-Michel Blanquer said, according to the Local, an English-language publication. “They are just all in front of their smartphones and from an educational point of view, that’s a problem.”

However teachers are concerned they’ll be required to search students to make sure they have left all phones in their lockers.

“How is the school going to stock them? And how are they going to make sure they’re given back to the owner at the end of school?” asked Gérard Pommier, head of the Federation of Parents in State Schools.

YES! Please make this a ruling at all schools worldwide.

The hardest part of school now is trying to make new friends when they have always their heads stuck in their phone and won’t interact with people anymore. It creates a huge barrier and can be quite isolating for them.

Do you think phones should be banned from school?

  • A fantastic idea! Kids need screen free time and if this is what it takes then its what they have to do.

  • Yes, good move. All students should either have their own locker or hand them in at the office.
    I didn’t have a mobile phone until I was 38 years old !

  • I work in a Catholic primary school in South Australia and our students have never been allowed to use mobile phones at school. They have to log them into the front office before school and pick them up after school. I find it odd that schools wouldn’t have this type of policy in this day and age?

    • I have a relative whose child goes to a private school that has that policy.
Their son was only given one this year so that he can contact either of his parents in an emergency. e.g they may be running late to pick him up and he is getting worried. It has emergency numbers programed into it and all other numbers are blocked. Not sure about texts. I don’t know if they are blocked or not. I suspect they are.

  • Oh! I’ve just read that one high school here in WA has banned the mobile phones at school!!! Here the article: https://www.communitynews.com.au/hills-gazette/news/glen-forrest-high-school-moves-to-ban-mobile-phones/

    • Read that this afternoon about the WA school. i agree children do not need to be on their phones all day. My older children grew up without them and they are ok, have a teen and she only has hers’ in case she is needed. The school knows this plus it is a basic one for school, no internet on it.
