An Adelaide court has heard how a couple allegedly tormented, neglected and brutally abused their two children.

The children were beaten, locked in cages, tied up and sexually assaulted. They had their fingers slammed in doors, they were tied to trees or locked outdoors as punishment, the Adelaide District Court heard.
In one distressing incident, the siblings were gagged and tied together on the family’s kitchen table and photographed while in a state of distress, according to the ABC.
Stock whips and bed slats were also allegedly used to beat the children. When they were tied to trees, they were sometimes left upside down for hours.
None of those involved can be named to protect the identity of the children. Their biological father and stepmother are both aged in their 40s.
The jury also heard that the father raped his daughter and that he was sometimes directed by his partner to abuse the children.
Prosecutor Amelia Cairney also told the jury the children were often locked outside overnight.
“The physical abuse involved acts of violence, including hitting or belting the children, slamming fingers into doors or physically restraining the children by tying them in trees or locking them in sheds or cages for periods of time,” Ms Cairney said.
“This ongoing abuse, on the prosecution case, resulted in an environment of fear and degradation.”
The father is charged with six counts of false imprisonment, five of aggravated assault, two of aggravated indecent assault and two of unlawful sexual intercourse.
His wife, the children’s stepmother, is charged with two counts of false imprisonment and two of aggravated assault causing harm.
The case continues.
