So you have a move coming up and keep staring at your kitchen wondering how you are going to attack it?

Don’t worry it has happened to the best of us. Unfortunately as fun as packing is, packing up your kitchen will take the longest period of time in your home. So you need to be organised and start packing up well ahead of your move.

We recommend being 100% prepared for your move at least 24 hours prior to your organised moving date and time.

So what do you need to consider when packing your kitchen? After all, your kitchen is stacked with most of your fragile glasses and crockery.

You should pack all of your unused crockery and cutlery as early as possible so you have more time to take the right amount of care. Packing glass and crockery is something you don’t want to rush.

Pack your essentials last; have a box ready for kitchen essentials like the kettle, tea and biscuits to be opened on arrival (you don’t want to be at your new home hungry).

When packing plates and cups you need to remember “the long side is the strong side” pack plates side on to create a stronger angle and prevent pressure damage. Cups and glasses should always be packed upright, including wine glasses.

When packing heavier items like plates and cutlery, try placing lighter objects like Tupperware and plastic cups on top to lighten the overall weight of the box.

Make sure you take the microwave tray out to be packed before you move. It is very common for people to forget this and end up with a smashed tray at the new home.

Always use plenty of paper; it’s cheap while replacing damaged items is not. Do not try to save costs by using newspapers; this will only end in writing smudged from the newspaper onto your clean white plates and glassware. I also highly recommend using paper over bubble wrap.

If you’re moving a fridge into storage, wipe down the inside of the fridge with vanilla essence which helps avoid smells and reduce mould. Once you have wiped the fridge with vanilla essence, place a couple of tea bags into the fridge to absorb any extra moisture. Also check all the compartments are empty. Not only will this prevent any spills during the move – it will be prevent any nasty surprises when you take your fridge back out of storage! Nobody likes mouldy food from a couple of years ago…

You want to keep everyone happy and hydrated while moving to keep the show running so it is important to prepare an esky with cool drinks and some easy snacks for the day. Just a hint – movers won’t say no to a cold drink…

  • I have not moved for 35 years (thank goodness) but prior to that anytime we moved I would always be amazed at how much stuff is in a kitchen.
I always wanted to get beds made first and then set up the kitchen.

  • Thanks for the handy tips – I am hoping that my next move will be just me and some clothes and leaving everything else behind. Don’t want another big house to live in.

  • Packing, oh no what a nightmare! I haven’t done it for quite a few years now and still remember it with dread. It’s something I don’t plan on doing in the near future and also don’t wish to

  • And label the top and side of your boxes! There’s nothing like digging through umpteen boxes looking for the saucepans when there are no names on them. The funniest thing I found unpacking, was the bag of rubbish that had been sitting on the kitchen bench to take out to the bin when we walked out the door. We figured out Grandma had been there in those final minutes and had thrown everything into one last box for me, including my sunglasses (thankfully she’d left the keys on the bench).

  • Thanks for sharing these great tips, packing time is also time to reduce stock and decide what items you haven’t been using and they can be donated too.
