Mum describes herself as a professional nitpicker.

For 12 years the Victoria mother, Anna Cukierman has been called on to take care of other people’s head lice.

“I get phone calls from very distraught parents saying, ‘Please come and save me’,” she told ABC Radio Melbourne.

“It’s the great equaliser in life, I think. Lice just doesn’t discriminate. Rich, poor, whatever — you can still get lice.”

Ms Cukierman offers a mobile head lice removal service, picking out the blood-sucking insects from children’s heads “like a monkey”.

She said most of her business was generated through word of mouth, as her name gets mentioned on online forums by frantic parents.

“People are time poor. A lot of times the kids just won’t sit for mum, and I’m someone else’s mum so they’ll sit nice and politely for me,” she said.

“They’ll sit there for hours and I can sit there for hours and pull nits and bugs.”

Ms Cukierman said she loves her job.

“My husband can turn around and say my wife is a nitpicker,” she said with a laugh.

“And I have to go, ‘Yeah, I am’.

“There are not many jobs people are genuinely grateful [for], but this is one.”

Would you use her service?

  • The lady makes it sound as though she combs or pulls them out by hand.
There is plenty of preparations, including herbal ones that you can use on your child’s hair and scalp. They don’t disciminate. They like hair that has been washed the night before or that morning. They jump from head to head if they are too close. They definitely don’t have to be touching.

  • I don’t envy her job as I had to deal with nits all through primary school with my three boys. What a pain that was. If I lived in the same state as her and I knew about her services I would have used her to. I had to treat everyones hair in the household anytime one of the boys got nits so it was very frustrating. Thank goodness the boys don’t get them any more.

  • Fortunately I’ve never had to deal with nits. I would use her services if she was close by.

  • Yes, with all the nit invasions we’ve had in this household lasting from many weeks and in some occasions several months, I would be happy to use her service (depending on the price).

  • No way! A bottle of conditioner and a comb and comb and remove away. Would not waste money on hiring anyone to do a job like this. I am surprised!

    • Also; nit removal time has always been a good time for a chat!

  • I just wish all parents were as committed to treating and getting rid of nits. I’ve passed this stage for now as my older high school kids haven’t had them in years. Still got my 4 yr old though

  • I wouldn’t pay to use this service but I’d sure as hell be paid for doing this! I HATE nits and would happily spend my days helping parents get rid of them.

  • Oh well. I remember that when my daughter had lice in primary school, we were all so stressed out at home. At one moment I got them too. I would have surely paid someone to help get rid of lice as soon as possible!!
