One Sydney-based school has been slammed online for including hand sanitiser, paper towels, baby wipes and tissues on their stationery list.

A discussion on Facebook saw parents sharing other odd items on their child’s statioenry list. One mother said she has spent upwards of $3,000 on items so far, shares Daily Mail.

‘We have vinegar in our list,’ another woman added.

A third chimed in: ‘My daughter is now in Year 12. All through her primary years we were asked to supply soap, paper towels, tissues and hand sanitiser. The usual stuff like pencils and glue sticks for the table in kindergarten.’

One mother said she was given strange looks like the staff at Officeworks when she had to request 21 Bostik brand glue sticks.

Another added, ‘I have no problem buying whatever the school asks for. This year, in addition to the normal book list items, parents are asked to supply tissues, hand towel, pump soap, magic erasers, paper plates and snaplock bags. No issues with it at all,’ one person explained.

Teachers joined in to the conversations to thank those parents supporting them, and explained why their help was so needed.

‘As a teacher, THANK YOU!! It makes a huge difference to the way the classroom can run when students come with these supplies. I can also guarantee you that six whiteboard markers do not last all that long considering how much they are used these days,’ one lady said.
‘The reason they ask for certain brands is because there are some brands that really do not stick. I know the school I work at ask for specific brands, but it’s only for that reason. It’s easier to have brands that we know will work well.’

Another teacher said: ‘The students use the whiteboard markers on their own individual whiteboards. You’d be surprised how many parents actually don’t buy anything at all. One year I spent close to $2,000 on my students. I feel sorry for the kids who have nothing it’s such an embarrassment for them.’

What is the strangest item on your child’s stationery list?

  • Wow, school stationary lists sure have changed since my kids were at school. Some strange items on them now. Vinegar!?!?!?!

  • Tissues and soap are supplied by the school. Other items like pens, ruler, gluesticks, eraser, sharpener, folders, pens, textas, crayons etc are bought by the parents. The school used to supply them but found it was cheaper for parents to buy. It also gives the option to choose the types you prefer.

  • Never had an issue with buying and supplying schools with appropriate requested items.

  • My daughters hands burn with hand sanitizer so I hope they never use that at school or they’ll be hearing from me. I do send tissues but everything I buy is no brand. I can’t afford the expensive stuff right after Christmas. I’m sending back last years books too. They were only one third used so I told the kids to fill those books then they get more. Three kids and I spent about $120. However I’m not sending everything they ask for. I told the kids to let me know if they need more than what I got. I’m not sending 20 books I sent 5. One for each class.

  • I suppose it is understandable that a pupil supplies their own whiteboard marker if it is used on their personal whiteboard. Children should be capable of taking their own tissues from home. Surely parents shouldn’t need to school to put them on a list. I really wonder why vinegar is on the list.

  • I’m amazed – nothing like that ever happened when my children went to school. We had a very active P & C [Parents and Citizens] association who did a lot of fund raising and supplied all these things for the whole school. I was very involved with the P&C so do know this happened.

  • No problem with hand sanitisers if it prevents kids from getting sick.

  • In primary school I remember tissues, kitchen towels, glue sticks.. Quite reasonable.

  • I’ve bought handsoap, tissues, cotton pads and the stationary stuff for primary school and think that’s reasonable. For secondary school we just have to buy stationary and exercise books.

  • Seems so different to what I required at school but I can understand teaching has evolved overtime

  • Not all schools have funding and teachers are buying things like this out of their own pockets to support our children’s learning, including the hygiene side that allows them at attend school. The mum who spent $3000 needs to rethink her shopping choices! I’ve found a lot of the things on my child’s list at Aldi, Kmart and big W for a few $$ each. My school lists asks for EXPO brand connector white board markers. They r getting the generic brand. I am an ECE teacher and my husband teaches high school English. Both require a LOT of white board markers and we buy the cheapest ones as they all last about the same amount of time. My child’s list asks for 1 roll of paper towel and I seriously have no issues supplying a twin pack. Just remember it’s all for ur children and even those kids who don’t have supplies. With what u provide they are able to get better educations and could even help break the cycle

  • We allow parents to choose their stationery brands however we do request a certain brand of glue stick because they work so much better.

  • we had to provide tissues but not the other stuff other than books and stationary

  • Not sure why your child would be using 21 glue sticks but I agree teachers shouldn’t be having to buy things out of their own pockets.

  • Things like tissues and paper don’t seem that strange…
