It has been reported that three students have contracted whooping cough in an outbreak in Sydney’s east.

Parents of children attending Bronte Public school were advised of current whooping cough cases by the school on November 7 this year.

A spokesperson from the NSW Department of Education told 9News.com.au that parents at Bronte Public School were first advised of whooping cough cases three weeks ago.

“Bronte Public School sent advice to parents advising of whooping cough cases on 7 November 2018,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

“The advice urged concerned parents to seek medical advice. The school has notified the local area health district about the cases.”

The department said it had been in contact with the school to remind it of its responsibilities in informing health authorities.

Whooping cough, otherwise known as pertussis, is an infection spread by airborne bacteria when sufferers cough or sneeze.

Symptoms include uncontrolled bouts of coughing, sneezing, a blocked nose and an elevated temperature.

  • The one thing that covid has taught me is that there are those that listen to science and will vaccinate and those that feel that the world is out to get them and refuse.

  • Croup is bad enough to hear a baby coughing and gasping for air, then crying, Thankfully it isn’t contagious. Whooping Cough is. Were a lot of children not vaccinated or was one batch faulty?
The only reason a child should not be vaccinated is if life is t risk because of a severe allergy.

  • I vaccinate my children but my baby is only 4 months old so it makes me so nervous when there are outbreaks.

  • When will parents vaccinate their children as a matter of course? These outbreaks can so easily be ended if only they would.

  • Wonder if this was caused by parents not vaccinating their children and sending them to school or if it’s a new strain. Hopefully all children make a full recovery.

  • I thought no vaccinations no school.. I definitely have my kids vaccinated, would never want them to get something I could have prevented.

  • I can’t believe in this day and age whooping cough is still a pressing issue. It seems to be growing. It is such a horrible illness that you would not wish on anyone. Clearly it’s a vaccination issue – the breakdown or non-take-up has reintroduced it to our community.
