Who loves online shopping as much as I do?

I love the convenience of being able to make a purchase online. I can get the same shopper’s thrill from buying a dress online that I would if I were to get in my car, make the trip to my local shopping centre, and buy it in person – except I have the added benefit of doing it from the comfort of my own home.

With every perk, however, there is a risk. In the case of online shopping, there are several:

  • The product I purchased does not match its online description
  • The product that was sent to me is defective
  • The product that was sent to me is completely different to what I ordered
  • The product I ordered does not come at all!

Every online shopping site will have its own return policy. Some can be very lenient, and allow full refunds for returns. Others are very strict, and may not allow returns or exchanges at all.

However, there is a way for you to insure that all of the above risks are covered for you, regardless of the vendor’s policies: PayPal.

Here is why:

PayPal protects you from all of the aforementioned risks. How?

Well, if you’ve purchased an item that does not arrive, or arrives looking significantly different to how it was described, you have the right as a buyer to file a dispute within 180 days of the payment. You will then be able to make a claim for a refund within 20 days of filing this dispute, and PayPal will protect you for the full price (plus shipping costs) with a ceiling of $20,000 per item. This does not extend only to tangible products. PayPal also protects you if, for instance, your hotel double-booked, the event you bought tickets for was cancelled, or the download you paid for did not download.

How to get a PayPal account:

To use PayPal, you will need to have your own PayPal account. This is simply a matter of going onto the PayPal website and creating an account for free (click here). Follow the prompts, and you will be able to link your bank account to your PayPal account. Now, whenever you make a purchase under PayPal, all it takes is entering your PayPal login details. Then voilà! The purchase is made. If you’re worried about PayPal storing your bank account details, don’t be. PayPal goes to great lengths to keep your information secure and safe from fraud, identity theft, and hackers.

Look out for the PayPal button next time you make a purchase online!

The PayPal way of paying incurs no extra costs and no downsides. It is faster, safer, and protects you from the risks of online shopping. It is also a great way to pay for airline tickets when you’re travelling overseas!

Now you can enjoy all the benefits of shopping and booking online with the confidence that you will not be wronged!

  • I buy a lot online. As long as it’s through PayPal and you check out the seller thoroughly, you’re pretty right. I avoid clothes and shoes though as its too hard to get the size right

  • For the most part, I have heard Paypal is worthwhile.

  • After watching ‘A Current Affair’ tonight, I am so pleased that I always do all my on-line dealings with Paypal. It is so easy to be ripped off online and this was by a supposed company that had been given the nod as a great innovator by the Shark Tank. Go figure!

  • I wouldn’t shop online if I couldn’t use Paypal. They have saved me a few times over the years. Best thing ever and no cost. What more could you want

  • How timely is this? I have only this week had my bank account hacked through using my debit card for online purchasing. The Fraud Dept with my bank is investigating it but the inconvenience to me of having to replace my card, wait 5-7 business days for it to arrive, and to notify all of my direct debitors is just plain infuriating. And all because someone illegally and criminally made purchases using my card details. Apparently a trusted Australian merchant was hacked but I don’t know which one (although I can trace the 3 I’ve purchased with in the last week or so) and nobody, not even my bank notified me. I will be opening up a Paypal account today.

  • The one thing I don’t like when you buy something online and want to return it. It’s just a hassle. I ordered shoes not so long ago and the price was including postage & packaging. My ordered shoe arrived in a different color and I wanted to return the item and asked for the right color to be send to me. However the shoes came from Germany and I had to pay $40 postage to return them….all because someone makes a mistake at the other end !

    • That’s quite unfair! You shouldn’t have to pay those 40 dollars at all!

  • I think I am fairly good at this. If I like something I will think on it for quite some time before choosing to buy it online.

  • Wow ,I did not know this about paypal. Yes it offers a lot of guarantees, but I am still wary of using it. I have never had a problem returning products that are faulty or the wrong size… most of the time you can do it in store.

  • I have a friend who tried to make a purchase via paypal. Apparently there is a business connection between the bank and paypal. There was plenty of money in the lady’s bank account. She also had advance funds in her paypal account. She checked that on-line, so did a trusted friend yet the transaction wouldn’t work. It took a few emails over a period of 4 working days before the transaction could successfully be made.
