We are constantly hearing what foods are best for our families, but have you ever wondered what the best options are for our little canine friends?

Here we discuss the best foods for your dog’s health as well as the foods you should completely avoid at all times. I personally make my dog’s food every week, sandwich bag it up and place in the freezer, I do this so I know exactly what my dog is eating, I know it is healthy and top quality, with fresh vegetables and meat.

My dog is 9 years old and you would never pick it, he is completely healthy, happy and full of beans! Please note that it is important for dogs to also eat dry food, as it is good for their teeth, not looking after their teeth properly can result in harmful infections that make dogs extremely ill. Getting dry food from the vet is the best option, as it doesn’t crumble, it is harder to break down, making it better for their teeth.

Best foods for dogs:

  • Cooked Chicken
  • Carrots, a great way to get your dog to eat is to grate the carrot and add to a cooked minced meat mix
  • Cheese (as long as your dog is not lactose intolerant (a very small percentage of dogs are)
  • Pumpkin
  • Eggs
  • Green beans
  • Salmon (Cooked and no bones)
  • Apple

Foods to never feed your dog:

  • Onion
  • Corn
  • Onion powder
  • Chocolate
  • Nuts
  • Mushrooms
  • Fatty trimmings
  • Cooked Bones
  • Sausages as they contain sulphite preservatives
  • Grapes

A mix I use often is placing in a fry pan: meat, some eggs, grated carrot, beans, broccoli and peas. He really loves this mix!

  • We used to have 2 dogs and I cooked a little bit for them. Now we have one and she’s fussy so I don’t cook so much

  • I just re-read this article. Vets recommend that you don’t give old dogs eggs becuase the high protein content can affect your kidneys

  • I have cooked for my dogs. I cooked up wallaby mince one time, with veggies, and they couldn’t get enough it! There is so much conflicting advice on what to feed your dog. I try to keep their diet varied, with dry food always on hand. I avoid giving them people food unless it’s plain old meat and veg.

  • No, in the past it was dog food from a tin and bones from the butcher! Today’s dog food is very different.

  • Our labrador recently passed away – he was 15 years old, so a very good age for a lab. He was an eating machine and it was a challenge to keep him within a healthy weight range. We usually fed him a variety of dog foods, but on one occasion we had some left over pizza and fed our dog two slices – I will never forget the huge smile on his face when he came looking for more.

  • I never cooked food for my dog , just gave her wet and dry food for dogs I just lately started and she loves it

    • If you are feeding your dog entirely on homecooked food I suggest you consult a vet. We were advised, as was a friend of mine who sees a different vet, that there is a special product you need to add to it. Some dogs like raw carrot but they don’t actually digest it
