Mandy Mouse is the latest character to join the Peppa Pig crew and we love her already!

Parents are applauding the introduction of the latest character to the Peppa Pig series, Mandy Mouse, as she promotes inclusiveness and normalises disability. In early April, British viewers were introduced to Mandy who is the first character in the show to use a wheelchair.

Everyday Life

Many believe that Mandy’s character will have a powerful impact on Peppa Pig viewers as she highlights disability as a normal part of everyday life. “A cartoon universe is a great place to introduce characters that aren’t ‘cardboard cutouts'” mother of two Pallavi Singh told The Indian Express. “It’s really important for me to let my children observe that each character/person is unique and to subtly steer them away from the ‘normal’ society generally throws at us.”

Other parents have acknowledged that a lack of visibility of disability in children’s programs is an ongoing issue. “Our daughter said ‘why isn’t Mandy Mouse playing like others?'” one father said. “Well she hasn’t seen many disabled people around and that’s a problem. Lack of visibility of disabled people in public spaces should be a concern.”

We love Mandy already and think she will be a much-loved and very welcome addition to the Peppa Pig family!
