A Perth mother has shared pictures of her badly-burned arms, chest and stomach after the Thermomix she was cooking with exploded.

Danika Jones was preparing a pasta sauce for dinner earlier this year when the popular appliance exploded.

The seal had recently been replaced by Thermomix after a product recall.

“I had popped the pasta sauce ingredients in the Thermomix using the same recipe I’ve used every week since I bought the machine more than two years ago,” she said.

“Towards the end of the process, it was pureeing the sauce when it started making a funny noise and vibrating.

“I walked over to turn it off and as I did that, it just exploded – the lid blew off and hot liquid went everywhere, all over me. The pain was intense.”

The mother-of-two from Halls Head, WA was rushed by ambulance to the hospital burns unit for extensive treatment

“This was an awful ordeal which I wouldn’t wish upon anyone else,” she said. “So many people use a Thermomix and they need to know how unpredictable they can be and how dangerous they can become when they malfunction.”

The mother-of-two is now urging Thermomix to introduce a full recall of the TM31 model, and is warning other users of the wildly popular appliance to be aware of the dangers.

Slater and Gordon lawyer Nakkie Le Roux said the firm was investigating a claim on behalf of Ms Jones.

“Danika has suffered serious injuries despite following the manufacturer’s instructions while using her Thermomix,” Ms Le Roux said.

“Preparing meals in a Thermomix has become an everyday activity in many kitchens all over Australia and it is very concerning that such an incident has occurred.

“We commend Danika for taking a stand and warning others about the potential dangers.”

A Thermomix spokesperson told news.com.au: “Since being made aware of this incident in January, Thermomix has been very cooperative in this case. We have made, and continue to make, every endeavour to work with Ms Jones to investigate this matter.

“Unfortunately, Ms Jones has declined our requests to investigate the appliance.

“Without a thorough investigation of the appliance, the manufacturer is unable to determine the cause of this incident. Unfortunately, on occasion the appliance can be used incorrectly.”

I am really glad I never joined the Thermomix trend!

  • Without a thorough investigation of the appliance, the manufacturer is unable to determine the cause of this incident. Apparently these machine have a black box inside it which logs everything the machine does, this could have hopefully helped to determine how this happened, so it wouldn’t happen to anyone else. Was it user error or a machine fault.
I hope this women is recovering.

  • I don’t own a Thermomix. It’s just too expensive to buy. But I find so weird that she refuses that Thermomix Australia investigates the appliance. This way you can’t be sure if it was really a problem with the machine or if it was used incorrectly. What’s the reason to refuse?

    • Maybe the company should try to trace a few (there may have been warranty cards posted to them by customers – I don’t know what their procedure is) and ask if they can test them. Without the machine what proof does she have that it is faulty.
However I notice that it had a new seal put in as a result of a product recall. It maybe faulty seals.
We had to request a replacement filter for our Vacuum Cleaner which was under warranty. When it arraved and I signed for it the driver mentioned that he had delivered a lot of that same size box from the same company in the last few weeks. No mention of a recall was mentioned when I rang the company about it but it wasn’t a safety issue at all.

      • I think she might be absolute right and have a case against Thermomix. But refusing to give them the appliance to investigate, puts in question her credibility. Now Thermomix is advising to change the seals every 2 years. Without this accident maybe it would have never happened.

  • Oh my goodness, that’s just horrific! I know a couple of friends who gave a Thermomix, they love it and use it all the time. I’ll have to let them know about this, just to warn them
