Hello!

A plus-size blogger, who predominantly writes about fashion, was body shamed for wearing the same dress as Meghan Markle. But she had the perfect come-back.

Katie Sturino runs the blog, The 12ish Style, on which she spotlights the sensualness of plus-sized clothing and aims to show that bigger fashion shouldn’t be exclusive to clothes that hide the body.

To prove her point, Sturino introduced her “Super Size The Look” series, in which she re-creates celebrity looks for plus-sized women.

Empowering Women

Sturino shared on her Instagram page that her series “is never about who wore it better…it’s about empowering women of all sizes to wear what inspires them.”

Since launching her series, she has ‘super-sized’ many celebs, including Kate Middleton, Princess Di and Katie Holmes.

Sturino has recently recreated a couple of fashion highlights from Meghan Markles’ tour in South Africa. We think she looks absolutely stunning.

Abuse

However, where there are lovers, there are inevitably haters and Sturino received many negative comments on the photos she shared.

The brutal comments included:

“She looks like she ate Meghan Markle…and stole her dress”

“Body Positivity is alot easier when you don’t look like a cow”

“put a yellow raincoat on her plus red earings and she would look like the back of a bus”

“Plus Sized Model TRANSLATION: Fat, unemployed wannabee”

There’s Still Work To Be Done!

Sturino has shared the comments to spotlight the kind of abuse that plus-sized women get.

“Every time I think we have made so much progress about our bodies and the way we talk about women, something pops up to remind me our work is not done!!!” Sturino commented on her post.

“The comments are brutal…they do not hurt my feelings, but they are scary! It’s scary that a woman who is almost the average size in this country would be regarded with such shock! Also, they don’t stop at my body, they are equal opportunity women haters who take shots at MM as well! Can’t be thin. Can’t be fat. Maybe STFU ABOUT WOMENS BODIES!!!!!” she ranted.

Sturino emphasised that she wasn’t going to let these haters get her down.

“All this to say, please keep spreading positivity. Please keep shining bright. Please don’t engage with the crazies in the comments. PLEASE DO LOOK AT YOURSELF IN THE MIRROR AND TELL HER THAT YOU LOVE HER!!!!!! (I just did)”

“There is a war on women’s bodies in the media and beyond and we are making headway but this sh*t reminds me to stay bright and keep going. Nobody deserves to be spoken to like this, on or offline. We have work to do!!!!”

With so many women feeling embarrassed about their bigger bodies, it’s refreshing to see someone like Sturino celebrate plus-size fashion.

  • And these same adults who are so quick to post nasty comments would be the first inline at the school office if their kid was being picked on at school.

  • Why do people have to be so nasty? She looks lovely whether she is copying a look or not

  • She looks fabulous, good on her!

  • Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure those outfits that Megan supposedly wore first, the girls from Laguna Beach/The Hills wore way before she did.
I had the first two pictured items in my very early 20s and I’m now 35.
But also, what’s wrong with liking an outfit someone has and getting it for yourself? I feel like people are so quick to hate these days, it’s really quite sad!
Good on Katie for doing what she’s doing. If people don’t like it then don’t visit her page and look at her pictures!

  • Love this article. I’m her newest follower! Love her love for herself. She is beautiful and it’s good to see variety in social media fashion because we all are different shapes and sizes, even throughout our own lives. I’m learning to love and live with my post 3 baby body and ppl like her help me not be so nasty to myself. Xo

  • Why do people feel the need to be such assholes? Are they that unhappy in their own lives that they need to bring down successful women who are inspiring others? It’s just disgusting behaviour and it drags all women down. Being nasty like that, especially when you are behind a computer screen is more unattractive then someone they deem to be ‘fat’.

  • So many people feel that it’s ok to say things like that online, I bet they would never say something like that to her face. Horrible, no wonder bullying at schools is out of control

  • This makes me sad. So many young girls will be growing up reading those toxic attacked on people who don’t conform to a persons idea of beauty. What people say can hurt and I if people have enough time to criticise someone or get pleasure out of hurting someone then there’s something really wrong.

  • Unfortunately there will always be nasty people out there bullying or putting down others

  • I think they both look gorgeous. Come on girls we should be celebrating all women and all body shapes. Its sad that people can be so nasty…..shame!

    Its not hurting anyone!

  • She looks stunning! Everyone should be entitled to wear what they like and not receive hate comments. She is comfortable in her own skin.

  • Meghan just may be her fashion icon. Nothing wrong with that, however there is with faceless gutless cowards who abuse people behind their keyboard.
