To help keep families warm and healthy this winter, leading dietitian and Mayver’s ambassador Susie Burrell has put together a list of her favourite porridge toppings and tips on how you can turn the age-old winter staple into a well balanced and tasty breakfast.

During winter it’s essential to eat a variety of foods to optimise your body’s immune health, so whether you call it porridge or rolled oats, the wholesome and warming dish is one of the most amazing breakfast bases you could ask for to add additional fruits, vegetables and nuts.

“Providing our bodies with good quality energy to help support our immunity throughout the cooler months, helps our bodies respond to the drop in temperature, fight off winter bugs and keeps you fuller for longer,” Susie says.

“One of my all time favourite winter breakfasts’ has to be porridge. It warms you up, it’s full of nutritional value and the versatility of toppings means breakfast never gets boring!”

Perfect Porridge

To make your porridge into a perfect balanced breakfast, it needs to have a carb (the oats), a protein (nuts, egg or dairy) and fruits or vegetables,

“Nuts are a fantastic source of zinc which is known for supporting the immune system as well as providing protein for energy, so when I’m making a sweet topping I’ll always add a swirl of a 100% natural nut spread like Mayver’s.”

“Then I’ll normally alternate between adding a handful of pepitas and cranberries to increase my fibre and omega 3 fats or top with dates and bananas for when I’m looking for an quick energy boost minus the added sugars.”

If you’ve never tried a savoury porridge before, it’s very similar to congee and is a fun way to add an extra serve of vegetables to the beginning of your day.

“Cooking the porridge as normal and mixing through some grated zucchini, cheese and adding a poached egg on top at the end will give you that perfect, balanced breakfast to get through the day.”

Susie’s favourite porridge toppers:

  1. Sweet porridge with pepitas, cranberries and Mayver’s Peanut Butter
  2. Sweet porridge with dates, fresh banana and Mayver’s Peanut Butter
  3. Sweet porridge with pepitas, chia seeds, blueberries, Mayver’s Peanut Butter and a spoon through of Greek yoghurt (try Susie’s Peanut Butter Brekkie Bowl yourself)
  4. Savoury porridge with zucchini, cheese and a poached egg
  5. Savoury porridge with asparagus, tomatoes and a poached egg

We recommend enjoying this tasty wholesome, winter staple with your loved ones this season to stay healthy by supporting your immunity, but whether you make it on the stop top or in the microwave, now that’s up to you!
