A UK  school principal has said he will expel students who have a boyfriend or girlfriend during school.

The Principal at Ruthin School in north Wales has told staff that he “strongly disapproves” of students developing romantic relationships with each other at school, shares 7 news.

Mr Belfield said that he would give them “worse reference” for university if students were to start a romantic relationship, Telegraph UK reports.

In an email to staff, Mr Belfield warned them that they need to be “more vigilant” about potential student liaisons.

“School is not the place for romantic relationships – ever. I strongly disapprove of any boyfriend/girlfriend relationships — and it will always affect any university reference I write (meaning — any student in a relationship will definitely get a worse reference from me).”

He added that he will “not hesitate” to expel students that have “any sexual contact” in school.

“Relationships can start at university — not at Ruthin School,” he wrote.

“There are plenty of students that wish to attend Ruthin School without the diversion of romance — and these students can replace those students whose focus is on bf/gf relationships.”

“Parents choose Ruthin School because it is a top ranking academic institution,” he said. “In my experience, students who are in a relationship, whilst at school, are at danger of academically underachieving.

“Therefore, if they devote their time to their studies, rather than the emotional turmoil connected with teenage romance, they will achieve higher grades and go to better universities.”

Parents pay $60,000 a year for their child to attend the school.

Seems extreme? I know many people who are together today because they fell in love at school and their relationship continued to marriage and children.

Do you support his decision?

  • The Principal doesn’t know if any of the pupils are having a relationship with pupils from other schools. Since when is only kissing classed as a relationship. I would love some parents to protest the Principal’s intention to let that influence a reference and destroy their child’s future education and career. His name and the school name have been made public so there maybe more than just parents whose children attend the school.

  • I don’t think this is his business.

  • Holding my sides and laughing! How is such a ridiculous decision policed? Relationships are just a part of growing up.

  • I think school principle is perhaps a bad career choice for this man. School is a place of learning and romantic relationships are a part of that. Allowing it to happen at school is a responsible way to supervise it so that there isn’t any sexual contact. Banning kids from doing things just makes them do it behind adults backs.

  • I can understand he doesn’t allow sexual contact in school, but not allowing any boyfriend girlfriend relationships is over the top in my opinion ! It’s a normal development for teenagers to experiment with relationships of the different (or sometimes the same) sex.

  • It seems that this principal is back in the dark ages. I agree with no sexual contact at school, but you can’t ban kids for having a boyfriend or girlfriend, ridiculous!

  • Mmm… quite a questionable decision. But it’s his private school, and I guess he can make his own rules.
