Hello!

The Christmas presents are all opened and our tummies are full. So now it’s time to get ready for one of the biggest shopping days of the year – the crazy Boxing Day Sales.

But it’s easy to get caught up in the hype and come home with Boxing Day duds.

“The reality is this is a day where retailers often try to fob off the duds they couldn’t sell throughout the year. You can pick up a bargain, but research is everything,” warns Margaret Rafferty, Managing Editor at CHOICE.

We know that “Australians turn from fun gifts and entertainment over the festive period, to essentials on Boxing Day. People are looking to save money on the big household items – washing machines, TVs, fridges and the like,” says Ms Rafferty.

Most Popular Buys During The Boxing Day Sales

The top items that Aussies are after for  the Boxing Day Sales, according to CHOICE.com.au are:

  1. Washing machines
  2. TVs
  3. Fridges
  4. Mattresses
  5. Portable air conditioners

But be warned, there are a number of appliances that have made the Boxing Day dud list so make sure you know your facts before you hit the shops.

“We wanted to make things easier this year, so we’ve released the CHOICE Boxing Day Sales Cheat Sheet to help Australians avoid buying what they think is a bargain, but is actually an expensive paperweight.”

The Boxing Day Sales Cheat Sheet below reveals which products you should avoid during your bargain hunting.

  • Wow, I had no idea these were so popular in boxing day sales! I mostly like to buy reduced Christmas decorations for next year. I would generally do some research before making a big purchase.

  • It’s an art distinguishing a “good deal” from what you actually need!

  • I don’t do the boxing day sales, Im too exhausted after Christmas to even bother! Rather spend time relaxing with my family !

  • With 2 little ones and one wage Christmas costs enough so no boxing day shopping for us

  • I will confess that my biggest Boxing Day splurge was getting brand new super-sized bath towels from Sheridan (40%-50% off!) — my first new towels in over eight years! Also, I made my purchase from the comfort of my computer chair in my jammies =D

  • we don’t normally go and get anything post christmas in the sales – but this year we splurged and purchased a new tv! we haven’t upgraded our tv in at least 10 years so treated ourselves to a new one!

  • I haven’t felt the need to do any Boxing Day shopping – apart from looking for a cruise. I’m taking a critical look at what I already have and I’m not buying anything new unless I really need it. So, no impulse buying for me.

  • Remember to shop local, if I can’t find them at my local I will shop sales online and often find bargains online.

  • I have never been to a Boxing Day Sale. Sometimes items at some retailers are on promotion for a week or 2 on Jan. too. If we are planning to buy new appliances then I do research in Dec. on brands, models and prices at various Detailers. One Jan. we bought a new Fridge ( we knew ours was needing major repairs and due to the age of it buying a new one was a better option. We also bought a new stereo (our old one had “died” a couple of months before) and a VCR which we had not previously owned. We had saved for the shopping and we never use credit card.

  • I would definitely be there early for a fridge, mattress or television but not for every day essentials!

  • My husband went out with 3 of our kids to do some shopping and said it was busier then Xmas shopping ! He made a movie and it was like an ant nest

  • I popped in to grab groceries, and was surprised by how empty the shops were.

  • With the New Year coming, I will be looking for a new fridge. No hype, but I bet I’ll get a good price.

  • I found that shopping online was a good way to look at prices and compare quality. Reviews are my godsend

  • Been keeping an eye out for a fridge for my mum but the ones listed are too big. I did read about Ikea fridges not being very good. Always hard to decide on fridges. I wish that they had added which ones were best to buy that would have been helpful.
