Psychologist urges mums to take kid-free holidays with their friends.

Psychology professor, Dr Nava Silton, says the constant demands of motherhood can be overwhelming.

“Motherhood can be very stressful. Whether it’s financial stresses, time stresses, just trying to get a whole lot done in a very short period of time,” she told Fox5.

“I think it’s really important for mothers to be rejuvenated and refreshed.”

Dr. Silton says that seeing their parents’ needs met is good for children.

“It’s very important for kids to see that balance that ideally needs to be achieved in a family situation,” Dr Silton says.

So what are you waiting for? You heard what the doctor said!

In all seriousness though, when did you last have a kid free night (or day)?

  • We left our eldest for a week when we had the opportunity to go to Malaysia. The moment I mentioned it my best friend jumped and said she would look after my daughter. She had a son the same age and they were best friends. They moved into our house for the week as we had a 3 bedroom house and they lived in a small 2 bedroom unit with no yard. They all had a great time.
It was very odd for me as I had never even had my daughter looked after by anyone else. I enjoyed the holiday but was also glad to get back home.

  • We used to take a holiday without the kids but I was always wondering what they were up to but if the doctor says it should be done then I’d have to agree.

  • oh I would love a kid free holiday – somewhere warm, near the ocean, so I can rest and recharge and nuture myself – I think all mum’s regardless of what they say would benefit from some mummy downtime with no responsibilities!

  • It really does depend on the age of children and the length of the holiday.

    • Cost is a large factor too and also care when away.

  • To take a holiday away with young kids is difficult and there is a lot of planning to do. Tohave a night out with girl friends is easy to do and should be done regularly!

  • I’m having a kid free night tonight. I have one every few months just so my partner and I can enjoy dinner and do something we’d like to do without worrying about and wrangling little people. I’ve never been on a kid free holiday but I think it would be a great way to unwind and decompress.

  • I’ve no desire to go away without my kids.
When the kids are at school, I’ve about 6 hours for myself every day, that’s plenty !

  • If a Mum does this she should make sure that adequate arrangements are made for the care of her children. I know one Mum who didn’t check whether her husband had made arrangements even though she knew he had no leave to take.
