A popular teething gel is being discontinued after SA Health issued a warning it could cause harm to children.

WCH Teething Gel, found at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital (WCH) in South Australia, will no longer be produced due to the ingredient ‘lidocaine’.

Deputy Director of Pharmacy at the WCH, Usha Ritchie, said revised recommendations from national and international medicines organisations have led to the decision to discontinue the product, reports 7 news.

“International and Australian medicines organisations warn against using the local anaesthetic lidocaine in products for infant teething,” Richie said.

She says the recommendations come after a “small number of incidents” overseas where overconsumption of lidocaine led to babies and children being harmed.

“We know there have been a number of presentations to the WCH emergency department linked to the consumption of too much lidocaine from teething gel, however no children in South Australia have had any serious adverse effects,” she said.

The recall comes after one mum issued an Urgent Teething Gel Warning After her Baby Almost Died. Read more here.

Public NOT happy at all!

The announcement has sparked outrage from the public with many saying it is a shame to see the product be pulled from sale.

“So because some people don’t follow the instructions and dosage, it gets pulled so no one can use it.”

“Just what every parent with a baby about to start teething needs to hear.”

“This product has been helping teething children for years. It’s RIDICULOUS that they have decided to pull it. Teething rings & cold cloths to bite on for ALOT of kids simply doesn’t cut it. You’re making a HUGE mistake no longer providing this very much needed product.”

” I’ve been using this for 24 years for mouth ulcers Urgh”

“Nnnnnooooooooooooo what are us adults meant to do now!”

“This is the best for teething and ulcers. Nothing else on the market as good as this product.”

“Oh my goodness. I come from interstate to get this. All teeth are through in all my kids but nothing better for apthous ulcer pain relief. It’s not like I drink it by the litre.”

  • Use a more natural based homeopathic one instead like Brauers so much safer and better piece of mind. Medications absorb right into the blood stream through the gums so scary
