Book Week is almost here and with it comes the challenge of finding a costume for the annual parade – we’ve got you covered with our top picks!

Book Week 2019 is just around the corner, with the celebration of reading and literacy taking place from the 17th to the 23rd of August.

The theme for this year’s event is ‘Reading Is My Secret Power’ and celebrates the incredible gift of being able to read and enjoy the world of books.

We’ve done the hard work for you, compiling our top picks of creative costume ideas.

Matilda

matilda

She’s the little girl with the incredible brain and an even more incredible heart. Matilda is the perfect choice for this years theme, representing the ability of education to empower children and her outfit is an absolute cinch! All you need is a navy or blue dress and red headband and a couple of books to carry (Roald Dahl of course!) and you’ve got a simple yet cute costume.

Harry Potter

While we can’t give points for originality with this one, Harry Potter is a classic character that isn’t too difficult to replicate! With just a lightning scar, a pair of round glasses and a wand you can transform any outfit into the perfect wizard’s costume. If your child would prefer Hermione to Harry, tease hair into a bushy style and add a wand.

Peter Pan

peterpan

He is the boy created by J.M Barrie who can fly and goes on adventures to the mythical land of Neverland – if that’s not a secret power, we don’t know what is! Peter Pan is also a super easy costume choice. Just a green t-shirt, green hat with a red feather and dark green or black pants should do the trick!

Room On The Broom

It’s the children’s book that was made into a popular animation, but Room On The Broom’s witch is the perfect costume option for those parents not wanting to buy something especially for the parade. If you have a dress-up box at home, chances are you’ll have a witches hat and cape and be able to put this costume together in no time!

A Super Reader

If choosing one character is just too difficult, a clever mum has shared her idea of dressing her child as a ‘super reader’ by placing images of their favourite books on a cape and putting a custom logo on the front of their t-shirt. We love this idea!! Definitely one worth stealing.

  • Thanks for the great ideas, book week is always a challenge for me. The last one I dressed my son as a page from a Tom Gates book, I drew an illustration from the book onto a white shirt, it worked out well I think.

  • We haven’t done book week yet but I think something like Meg who is a witch from Meg and Mog – super simple; a black dress and witches hat from the two dollar shop!

  • Is it a bit naughty of me to be a tiny bit grateful that this may not happen this year?

  • Yep, so glad dress ups weren’t the go when my kids were at school

  • I’m so glad book week dress ups weren’t a big thing when my kids were in primary school. I think I would have really struggled with costumes

  • I see so many parents buying their kids book week costumes, half the time the kids are unaware of who they’re even dressing up as! That’s so sad. My kids used to find their favourite book, and we would make a costume of a character in that book. It increased their love for that book and we had fun creating together

  • Book Week used to be all about reading interesting books, not about who has the best costume. Why does everything have to become so commercialised? Let’s get back to basics, make sure all children know how to read and are up to recommended standards and understand the meaning of what they are reading.

  • My daughter made her decision last year that she would go as the witch from Room on The Boom. So I’ve made her a long ginger plait for her costume. But her school did it in October last yr and we haven’t heard anything about it just yet so I guess it’ll be delayed again!
