TV favourite Rachael Finch has announced she is pulling out of covering the Rio Olympics due to her concerns about the Zika virus.

The Seven presenter this afternoon announced that she would not be going to the event, as she is concerned about the implications for her family plans.

‘I would have absolutely loved to go to Rio to be a part of the Olympic coverage with the Channel 7 team, but have decided not to go,’ she said.

‘Misha and I are wanting to have more children and with the Zika virus an issue we don’t want to take this risk…’

Zika infection is caused by a virus transmitted by certain tropical mosquitoes. It has been linked to birth defects including microcephaly and severe brain malformations.

  • Smart decision! – I too wonder what will happen when our Aussie team return from RIO and how we are going to prevent the spread of the Zika virus – I hope our government and medical teams have a practical way of ensuring we are all safe from it.

  • Better to be safe than sorry. My husband got severe food poisoning in Rio and ended up in hospital on a drip.

  • I wonder what measures Australia is taking for returning athletes / media and spectators from the games to ensure they are not carrying and spreading the virus when they return?

  • Way to go Racheal! Putting the health of your future family and the health of you and your partner. The chance of someone bringing Zika back from Rio scares the heck out of me being a young mum that will be starting IVF soon. I pray that it doesnt happy!!!

  • I wouldn’t go either. I think it’s a personal decision and one that should be respected.
