Chocolate Crackles would have to be an all time party favourite.  Do you agree?

After MoM Member Kate submitted this recipe, we asked who remembered Chocolate Crackles.

Hands shot up and suddenly everyone was reminiscing about birthday parties and school fetes.  Where platters of chocolate crackles always graced the tables.

Some of us remembered that Chocolate Crackles were the first recipe we made on our own.  One member thought she was a very clever chicken to have added a flourish of sprinkles on top!

When did Chocolate Crackles first appear?

According to Australian Food Timeline, the earliest Chocolate Crackles recipe was printed in an advertisement in the Australian Women’s Weekly. This was on Saturday 18 December 1937.

The advertisement was placed by Edible Oil Industries, a subsidiary of Unilever, who made Copha. Copha is a uniquely Australian ingredient made from solidified coconut oil.

They’re an Aussie icon!

Few Australians need an introduction to Chocolate Crackles. They’ve been a favourite for children’s parties and cake stalls for more than 80 years. Much like lamingtons, honey joys and school fete toffees, they’ve been around as long as we can remember.

They are loved by young and old.  Look around at any party and you’ll see an adult or two sneaking a Chocolate Crackle! There’s nothing better with a cuppa! It’s also probably because they’re chocolate flavoured and easy to make – you just melt and mix.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups Rice Bubbles
  • 1 cup Icing Sugar
  • 1 cup desiccated coconut
  • 250g Copha

Method

  1. Mix all the ingredients together, spoon into patty pans and chill until set

  • I absolutely loved these as a kid. It has inspired me to try making them with my daughter this weekend.

  • I make mine with coconut oil, yacon/ coconut palm syrup, puffed kamut or puffed brown rice, desiccated coconut and raw chocolate powder. My kids sure like them.

  • I remember making these with my Nanna except we added cocoa. Think this may be missing from the ingredients.

  • Along with Honey Joys and Truffles, these were the treats of our childhood. So easy to make, and we felt like the luckiest kids in the world.

  • That is the same recipe I use too. I loved chocolate crackles as a kid and now my kids always request them for their birthday parties too. A definite favourite!
