This is my mum’s recipe and all the grandkids LOVE it. Her mother passed it down to her and now I am making it for my boys.
There are 4 basic steps. Make the sauce, make the pasta, make the mince filling, then put it all together. When each step is done, it is quite easy to complete!
Also with the extra mince, you can make meatballs and freeze them for a midweek spaghetti and meatballs!

Ingredients (serves 4)

  • 600gm Lasagne Sheets made with the Phillips Pasta and Noodle Maker- cut into lengths of about 10 cms.
  • FOR THE PASTA FILLING
  • 500gm Beef Miince
  • 2 Eggs - slightly beaten
  • 1 1/4 cups Grated Parmesan Cheese
  • 1 1/4 cups Fine Breadcrumbs
  • 1 1/4 cups Water
  • 1 Crushed Garlic Clove
  • 1 Tablespoon Chopped Parsley
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • FOR THE TOMATO SAUCE
  • 720ml Passata Sauce
  • 1 Onion
  • 1 Crushed Garlic Clove
  • 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
  • 1 Tablespoon Mixed Italian Herbs- (parsley, oregano, basil)
  • 2 Tablespoons Red wine

Method

  1. In a large bowl, mix well the beef mince, eggs, grated cheese, breadcrumbs, crushed garlic, herbs and water. Taste and season with salt and pepper. Once mixed well, leave in the fridge until you need it.
  2. For the sauce- Sauté the onion and garlic in olive oil until lightly brown.
  3. Add some red wine and allow to cook off a little.
  4. Add the Passata sauce and herbs and allow to cook for at least 30 mins.
  5. Assemble the Cannelloni- Take a piece of pasta and place a small amount of mince at the end of the pasta. Roll the pasta like a sausage roll. Repeat with all the pasta sheets.
  6. In an oven-proof dish place enough of the sauce to coat the bottom of the dish.
  7. Lay the cannelloni in a neat rows on top of the sauce until the dish is full, but not too cramped. Leave a little space in-between each of the tubes.
  8. Place more sauce on top of the tubes and enough to cover the pasta.
  9. Place a piece of baking paper over the pasta and then cover with foil. bake in a moderate oven for 45 minutes. Check to see if pasta is cooked, if not leave in oven a little longer. If pasta looks like it is drying out, add some more sauce.
  10. Serve with some parmesan cheese. Buon Appetite!

  • Many time I bought the dried cannoli rolls at the supermarket , fill it with spaghetti bolognaise mince , put them side by side in an ovenproof dish , then top the rest with the sauce , then sprinkle with parmesan cheese on top. Bake for 40-45 mins and it is done . Very easy and kids love it .
