A Treat for the Kids

Ingredients

  • 12 Small Granny Smith Apples
  • 4 Cups Caster Sugar
  • 1 tpsn white vinegar
  • 1 Cup Water
  • 1 tsp Red food colouring
  • Paddle pop sticks

Method

  1. Wash and dry the apples and shove in paddle pop sticks into the middle of each apple. Make sure the paddle pop stick is wedged in securely.
  2. Combine the 4 cups sugar, 1 tsp vinegar and 1 cup of water in a small heavy based pot and bring to the boil
  3. Stir in the food colouring and leave the syrup to simmer for about 20mins until temperature reaches 150C or until a small amount of syrup dropped into cold water reaches crack stage – it should set hard and be hard to crack with fingers.
  4. Remove the pot from the heat and stand in a baking dish of water until the mixture stops bubbling. When the mixture has stopped boiling, hold an apple by its stick, dip into the syrup, tilt the pan (and the apple) till the whole apple is covered.
  5. Place toffee coated apples on baking paper and leave to harden.

  • Toffee Apples were always made with granny smith apples when i was a kid and then they suddenly changed to other apples and the apples were no longer crisp and crunchy. Has to be granny smiths

  • I used to love these. My Nanna used to make them in red but she’d also use green colouring for a change.

  • I used to make these years ago and it was a way I got my kids to eat a apple and the bought ones were not very nice apples so it was a waste of money buying so that was why I started doing my own. They are so easy to make as you only made enough that they had no more than three each and they can get it on their clothes so they had to stay at the table and eat so I could control them with sticky hands with a face washer wet and ready so they touched nothing until their hands and face and tops were clean.

  • I have not seen a Toffee Apple in years. It’s something we used to have as kids. Really not great for our teeth!! And I remember they used to be the soft and crappiest apples inside!

  • I was never a fan of these when I was younger, so I probably wouldn’t make them for my children either.

  • These were one of my favourite treats when I was young. Didn’t realise just how simple they were to make. Don’t see them much these days.
