Restaurant bans parents from having more than one alcoholic drink if they’re with kids. Fair call?

The Mirror reports, a restaurant in New York has split opinion with its controversial policy banning any diner with children from consuming more than one alcoholic drink.

Since the bar’s policy, which has been in place for several years, started circulating on social media recently it has sparked outrage among parents who disagree with the enforcement of the rule.

The restaurant refuses to serve a second drink to “one responsible adult” dining with children.

They explain the policy to customers as soon as they arrive and if anyone disagrees with it, they are invited to leave.

The policy says: “The commitment to end fatalities from drinking and driving requires all of us to participate.

“Each of us take part in this mission in our own unique way.

“We at Peddlers will limit one of the responsibilities adults to 1 alcoholic beverage while dining with children.”

Restaurant manager Melissa Gravelle explained the policy is about “giving children a voice” and reducing the chance of drink-driving related accidents, 3News reports .

“I could never live with myself knowing that I killed somebody driving,” she said. “I could never do that so and it’s a choice that you can avoid.”

Fair call! Do you agree with the rule or think parents should be able to make their own minds up?

  • well it’s their business so i suppose that they can do whatever they like. it’s up to the patrons on whether they want to attend or not

  • I’m not sure whether or not he law applies to all states but the bar staff can refuse to serve a customer more drinks if the person is obviously drunk or close to it. If it is policy I am sure there would be a sign somewhere. I am sure the owner has the patrons’ health and safety in mind, especially the children who can’t fend for themselves. Some people can drink more safely than others. The staff don’t know which ones so they take the best precautions possible.

  • I think it is a fair call – I love that they want to protect the children that dine in their restaurant – good on them. My husband and i will always decide before we go out as a family who will be the designated driver (most of the time it is me!- which is my choice) and I will have one glass of wine or cider with dinner and then call it quits – I have two beautiful children and I would hate to cause harm to them because I chose to risk drink driving

  • As long as they’re clear when diners arrive, I don’t ave a problem.

  • Great in theory but doesn’t work in practice. People want to drink they will just smuggle it in.

  • I really don’t agree or disagree … people have a choice – they accept the rule or they eat elsewhere.

    • Exactly – plenty of restaurants and choose one that suits your tastes.

  • This is up to them & it clearly states the rule has been in place a long time and it’s explained to people before they start their dining experience. It’s only since it’s gone up on social media that it’s an issue. If you don’t like the rule don’t go there to eat, it’s obviously not done the restaurant harm as they’re still trading.

  • The restaurant can make its rules and diners can make choices.

  • An interesting call but l do believe parents would not be drinking up and driving.

  • Their restaurant, their rule. If someone is not happy with it, they can go somewhere else. Nobody obliges them to dine there.
