Rice Malt Syrup really did become hugely popular quickly!  We know it became a big thing earlier this decade because it was ‘sugar free’ but why did Rice Malt Syrup have everyone gushing?

Rice Malt Syrups have popped up suddenly in the supermarket and recipe everywhere.  Especially since ‘Bliss Balls’ became so huge! Sugar alternatives are always so popular!

First let’s explore some Rice Malt Syrup Facts – like what it actually is and how it’s made.

Rice malt syrup is made from 100% organic brown rice. It is made by culturing rice with enzymes to breakdown the starches and then cooking until it becomes syrup.

Rice malt syrup is 100% fructose free.

Why would you use Rice Malt Syrup instead of sugar?

According to Steph Lowe from the Natural Nutritionist, it’s a no brainer when considering the swap from sugar to rice malt syrup.

“The importance here is that the carbohydrates in rice malt syrup provide a steady supply of energy, requiring up to 90 minutes digestion time.

Other sweeteners like sugar, honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar and agave, which range from 50-90% fructose, are faster releasing sugars. This can cause insulin spikes, the associated blood sugar crashes (the blood sugar-insulin rollercoaster) and therefore cravings, hunger and fatigue.

Or in other words, the all-too-common 3.30-itis. Chronically elevated insulin levels lead to fat accumulation and longer term, obesity and diabetes”.

Steph goes on to remind us in her article that avoiding the blood-sugar rollercoaster is the key to satiety, hormonal control and weight management.

To quote Sarah Wilson, the I Quit Sugar expert … “the problem with fructose is that the metabolic burden rests on your liver. It is converted directly to fatty acids, and then body fat”.

Is there a downside to Rice Malt Syrup?

It’s really important to remember that Rice Malt Syrup is a sugar alternative.  It’s not a non-sugar all together.  It really doesn’t have any nutritional benefit but it is a better alternative to some other sugar alternatives.

We recommend doing as much research as possible before you jump onto the Rice Malt Syrup bandwagon.  But if thinking about it means that reducing your sugar is on your radar, that is always a good thing.

So there’s a few Rice Malt Syrup Facts.  Now for some recipes.

What we love about lots of recipes that include Rice Malt Syrup is that they are very natural.  The ingredients are often plant based, high in protein and other nutrients.

Because of this, the recipes tend to be rich and dense which often encourages feeling full after eating far less food than if you were eating food made from processed sugar and other processed ingredients.

  • I used Rice Malt Syrup for a long time a few years ago and it just got too expensive because Woolworths only sells the little jars and I would end up needing almost a full jar to substitute it in recipes.
