Luke Batty should have been celebrating his 15th birthday this week.

Luke was just 11 when he was killed by his own father, who beat him to death with a cricket bat.

Since his death, Luke’s mother, Rosie Batty, has dedicated her life to a campaign against domestic violence in the hope that no other family has to go through what she has. This week she paid tribute to her son in a touching Facebook post via the Luke Batty Foundation page.

“Happy birthday to my beautiful Luke,” she wrote. “We all miss you so much. I am celebrating you today. There’s an entire community campaigning for change in your memory. We’ve achieved a lot since we started Never Alone two years ago to this day. I know you’d be really proud of us.

“From Mum.”

The Luke Batty Foundation aims to deepen the understanding of family and domestic violence, among all Australians, in order to make system changes.

  • She is the strongest woman. I’m reduced to tears every time I read something about Luke and Rosie. It’s such a tragedy – it should never have happened. We can only hope that more change happens because of her campaigning and more children saved.

  • This is such a tragic story. Poor mum. It must be terrible for her to live without her kid. :-(

  • My sincere and heartfelt wishes go out to you on the loss of your son Luke. My youngest son’s name is Luke and I feel for your loss. I remember the tragedy of the event which took his life. I applaud you for starting up the cause ‘Never alone’ and I believe Luke would be proud of you. I have been a victim of domestic violence more than once and I know the scars emotionally and physically it can cause to someone. I stand with you and pray that as you honour your son in this venture, I know you will keep his memory alive in your heart forever. God bless you and keep up the much needed great work that you are doing in legacy of Luke’s life.
