Roxy Jacenko shares why she lets her four year old stay up late even on a school night: ‘You’ve got to do what works for you and your kids’.

The 38-year-old mum of two, Pixie, 6 and Hunter, 4, told 9Honey she lets her son Hunter go to bed at 11pm even on a school night, so she can spend more quality time with her child.

“I suppose when you’re a working mother and you leave early in the morning and get home late in the evening, putting your kid to bed at seven o’clock becomes something that you don’t want to do — because if you do that, then you don’t spend time with them,” she said.

“So I sort of let Hunter go to bed later… and later and later.”

“I get home at six sharp every night now but I want to spend time with both Pixie and Hunter, and that means that they go to bed late.”

“I think the reality is there’s no set formula, it has to be what works for you as a parent and what works for your kids.

“People will disagree with my mentality of ‘Let the kids go to bed when they want to go to bed’ but I want to spend time with them, and that’s what works for us,” she continued.

“Sure they’re tired in the morning, but they’re happy kids because they’re spending time with myself and Olly.”

Gosh, they are lucky kids.  I don’t even let my 14 yr old stay up until 11pm on a school night.

Kids need good quality sleep. Kids aged six to 12 years old should get nine to 12 hours of sleep a night, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Not getting enough sleep is associated with an increased risk of injuries, high blood pressure, obesity and depression.

  • Doubt the children are getting quality time any where. They would be so tired. Schooling would suffer, and all that is happening is tired children wailing I don’t want to go to bed yet.

  • I think she’s being really selfish here. She’s depriving her kids of a good nights sleep, so very important in everyone’s life. If it’s so important to her to spend time with them, go home earlier to do it

  • Don’t think these are such lucky kids.
Getting enough sleep is needed to function properly and for a good development.
Even my 13yr old doesn’t make it that late. She takes herself to bed by 9 – 9.30pm at school days.

  • Ops. No, it wouldn’t work for me because maximum at 10 pm I go to bed. Often a little earlier. ;-)
Constantly sleeping less than recommend doesn’t sound very good to me anyway.

  • I don’t believe this routine is going to be good for her children long term.

  • Lol, my nearly 14yr old daughter goes to bed at 9-9.30 at school nights, the younger ones go earlier. But then I’m a SAHM and that’s a choice.

  • Whatever works for their family I guess.
Personally, I’m tired and want to spend some time with hubby and unwinding from the day (with 2 under 3). Our kids bedtime is between 8/8:30 and they’re normally up around 7am. I’m lucky if I get to sleep by 11:30 after cleaning/filling bottles and spending time with hubby but that’s just the nature of things at this stage.
