The Danish Royal family have issued a brief statement to say Hobart-born Princess Mary, her husband Crown Prince Frederik and their children would celebrate the festive season with family in Hobart.

The royal couple last visited Australia in 2013.

Princess Mary who grew up in the Hobart suburb of Taroona, has not been to her home state for five years.

The Princess has two sisters, Jane Stephens, 49, and Patricia Bailey, 47 who both live in Hobart, as does their father.

Their four children: Prince Christian, 10, Princess Isabella, 8, and twins Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent, aged 4 will join them on the trip. Possibly the first time for the twins to meet their aunts and grand father.

Maybe I will bump into them somewhere. I might have to stalk the docks around Sydney – Hobart yacht race where they usually like to hang out.

Will you be travelling far to spend Christmas with family or friends?

  • Lovely to see her return to Australia with the family.

  • We have to split Christmas across states which makes it an even more hectic time for the family but in the end we get to spend time with all our family which is lovely.

  • We’ll be splitting our time between 3 families on the day this year. Not the relaxing day I had hoped but you gotta do what you gotta do :)
A lot of respect for Princess Mary. I don’t know if I could do what she has done, even if she did get to marry a prince!

  • It’s good to see her bring her family to Australia.
Unfortunately this year we’re not going anywhere. I had all intentions to save for trip but hard with one income and 4 kids.

  • So glad to hear that Princess Mary will be spending Christmas in Australia. Having just recently watched the telemovie about their romance, she’ll be most welcome back here where it all began.

  • What a lovely family ! I’ve no family here in Australia, they’re spread over the world and meeting them all together is hard and rare (last time must have been 7 or 8 years ago). It’s a blessing when we’re able to see our families regularly !!

  • Hopefully my family will come to me this Christmas and with food as I will be recovering from surgery over Christmas.
Love how the Danish royals can still come to Tassie and get a reasonable amount of privacy to just be a family. It’s lovely that the paparazzi stay away from them.

  • how exciting for Tassie (wish I was going home to Tassie for christmas) – I hope they all have a wonderful time and that Tassie spoils them with lovely weather and a perfect summer christmas.

  • They are such a relatable family, love how they do this kind of thing. Our families are too spread out across the world for regular get togethers, every few years at most.
