Oddball, who proved Maremma dogs could be used to protect a Victorian penguin colony from foxes and inspired a movie, has sadly died.

“Very sad news for the Middle Island Maremma Project with the first dog used passing away.

Old Oddball was used to prove the theory of how a dog could protect a native species on a little island just off the coast (Middle Island). Old

Oddball has gone to the big chook run in the sky and will rest in peace!” the Middle Island Maremma Project posted to Facebook on Wednesday.

Shane Jacobson also shared the sad news.
“I’m very sad to announce that the real dog Oddball that the film was based on has passed away at the age of 15, the film has been enjoyed by millions of people around the world, but the applause truly belongs to that wonderful Dog, The animal kingdom has sadly lost one of its gentle bodyguards. And my heart goes out to Swampy Marsh, the man who had the pleasure of having Oddball by his side, a mans best friend. RIP Oddball.”

RIP you beautiful dog. My son loves your movie. He will be very sad to hear the news.

  • I didn’t see the movie but I know what it’s like to lose a beloved pet. Our old boy left us in December, 3 days after Christmas, I’m still adjusting to it. Thinking of Swampy Marsh,

  • No doubt the owner of Oddball is absolutely heartbroken. No longer suffering the problems that come with old age. Oddball had a great impact of the survivial of the penguins he guarded for part of his life. Hopefully other dogs will take over his job in protecting our wildlife. The photos show he was an old dog. At 15 years of age he has been a very courageous and protective beautiful dog.
