NSW health authorities are urging parents to get their kids vaccinated with the free flu shot after a child died from influenza.

The child was one of 19 admitted to Sydney’s children’s hospital between April 3 and July 8 with the flu, with only two of those infants fully vaccinated, reports 9 news.

It was the first death of a child for the 2018 flu season, NSW Health said.

“This is an important reminder to parents who have not yet vaccinated their children that influenza can be life-threatening and it’s not too late to vaccinate,” Dr Kerry Chant, NSW Chief Health Officer, said in a statement on Friday.

News of the death comes as the authority predicts a slow start to this year’s flu season in NSW, with 256 cases confirmed in the week ending July 8, compared with 6449 cases in the equivalent week in 2017.

  • My understanding is that if you get the flu soon after being vaccinated it means you had already come into contact with it not long before you were vaccinated and it hadn’t had a chance to work in your bloodstream etc. It is really strange that a person would suffer from genuine flu for months.

  • It has been a bad flu season and it’s quite hard to distinguish between a cold and a flu at times.

  • I can’t believe the comment below claiming the flu does not kill people. People, especially the elderly and the young, get the flu. Then they get complications caused by the flu. The complications combined with the flu kills people. So vaccinate to avoid getting the flu, hence avoiding the complications, and possibly avoiding death.
As for the woman who claims to have had the flu for 8 months after having a flu vaccine, why did you let it last so long? If it was actually the flu, it would be an extremely rare reaction so it’s still the best thing to have your kids vaccinated. Ultimately, it’s better to suffer in the short term [if at all] then die

  • I’m in two minds about the flu shot — I got it through work once and then had the flu for 8 miserable months. I’m normally all for vaccines, but the flu shot is one I can’t seem to bring myself to give to our Punks.
