Hello!

A lot of the time the media shit me. They truly do.

It seems that everytime they interview a celebrity mother who has a child, they spend the entire interview gushing about their abilities as a mother.  If you’ve had one child, you’re incredible and if you’ve actually gone on to have two (or gasp, more) you can almost see them go down on their knees in the mere presence of someone that rivals the good lord for position as most high.

Their interviews centre what an incredible job they’re doing juggling kids and a career and still managing to look amazing … and all the while the celeb in question allows it to spout forth and take the glory.  Well, wouldn’t we all look amazing, appear to be handling it all so well and be back to pre-baby weight within weeks if we had millions of dollars and nannies, personal trainers and stylists on hand?  Geez – of course we all would!

So you can imagine my reaction when I listened to Jackie O this morning tell Sarah Jessica Parker how amazing she is and what an incredible job she is doing especially with THREE children.  I don’t have any beef with Jackie O, in fact now more than ever she seems to be more down to earth and beautifully open about her journey as a mum.  And she probably felt she had to tell SJP she was doing an amazing job (because after all, that’s what we tell celeb mums).  But my point is, she did.

Expecting to hear the same celebrity response to the praise, I can only say I was delighted – in fact, I almost burst into tears – to hear Sarah Jessica Parker say that (and I paraphrase because I can’t find a recording to play back to you):

“I am not a SuperHero and I’m not a SuperMum.  The real heroes are the mums out there who are not celebrities who have children, work, run homes, juggle financial difficulties and do all this without support.  I am lucky that I have the financial means to decide whether and how much I work and I am blessed that I have the support to make these choices.  Everyday I think how hard real mums work and that they are the real heroes”

So, SJP, I love you for your ability to think beyond your own frame of reference and realise that in saying what you said this morning, you are more real to me than any other celebrity I have ever witnessed.  Real mums do do it tough.  We love it but there are lots of days that are very, very hard.  And it’s on the tough days that we have to get through it – without nannies, a big fat bank account, a stylist and a trainer – and still manage to raise a smile and a hug for our beautiful children.

What do you think when hear the media talking to celeb mums?

  • Glad to hear that she acknowledges not everyone can afford the same luxuries she can.
Wish we could all afford to have help at hand and not have to work all the time so that we could spend more time with the kids doing things that are fun and will make memories.

  • There are quite a few down to earth celebrities, who acknowledge the extra assistance they get.

  • They’re people too so they have the same struggles. Maybe not the same wallet or dollars in the account, but still people

  • Wow that was refreshing to read. I think most celebrities pretend that they do most of the day to day things so that the rest of us think that but the media portrays and makes reference to nannies and all the other help that money can buy. I would love for celebrities to swap lives for a week with a real housewife and see how they fare!

  • I agree well done – as much as I love celebrities sometimes i wish the media would leave them alone.

  • Good on SJP. I often wonder how some of those other celebrity mums just sit there with a straight face and lap up the compliments when they’re being called super mums, all the time knowing they don’t do it tough, they have nannies and all sorts of helpers and we all know it, lol!!
