Hello!

If you’re a fan of Costco, we don’t have to convince you about the beauty of buying bulk. But if you don’t live near a mega warehouse, the savings on bulk buys are a bit out of our reach. That is until now! Woolworths has announced that they have partnered with a wholesaler to deliver BIG savings directly to your door.

Most of the big supermarkets have dabbled in bulk buys. Coles have occasionally dedicated a shelf or two to bigger-sized value products – like their 950g froot loops or a 2 kilo bucket of cake mix.

Even Aldi upsized their staples – albeit a bit late – when they recently dumped gynormous bags of flour, sugar and toilet paper onto the special buys aisle. The discount retailer had obviously hoped to jump on the COVID-chaos panic….but unfortunately they missed the boat.

Big Bulk Better!

Woolworths has taken a giant step forward in the world of bulk supply and has partnered with Aussie food wholesaler PFD Food Services, who are now selling direct to the public via Woolies online.

The new Woolworths PFD shopping site has almost 100 products to choose from including popular pantry staples such as rice, pasta and flour, as well as meat, poultry, and frozen items. The product range is expected to grow over the coming weeks, as demand increases.

The Woolies/PFD partnership was initially available to Woolworths’ business-to-business (B2B) customers, which included day care centres, schools, disability services and nursing homes. However, Woolworths has now expanded the service to include households.

Bulk Products Delivered To Your Home

During the height of the pandemic, PFD made a leap into consumer land with their new ‘PFD 2 Home’ initiative. The major wholesale supplier for such brands as Mars, McCain’s, Masterfoods and Mainland cheese and many others, made their discounted food supplies available to home-shoppers via delivery or click-and-collect. However, there is a $200 minimum order value and the website states that delivery could take up to 2 days.

Now with the Woolworths bulk buys section, you can simply slip in a massive box of fish fingers into your regular weekly online order and save big.

Save BIG Bucks

Looking at the PFD section on Woolworths online, there are freezer items, fresh meat, as well as pantry and household items.

The biggest bulk savers for me is the 2kg tub of Lemnos feta cheese for $28.49. That’s $14.25 per kilo for the bulk buy, whereas a regular slab of feta cheese is $25 per kilo – massive saving. Planning a party? There’s a 5kg packs of Ingham’s Crumbed Chicken Drumsticks for $76.89 or 3 kilos of I & J Crispy Battered Flathead Fillets for $66.42.

There’s a mega 4 litre jug of tomato sauce for $10.27 – that’s 26cents per 100ml (the usual price is 50c per 100ml). There are also 5kg packs of pasta, 4 litre canister of olive oil and 12.5kilo bags of flour. There are also bulk bags of tea and a super-sized tin of Milo.

So make some room in your pantry, clear space in your attic ’cause it’s time to stock up and save.

  • This is great and especially if shopping for staples for elderly that struggled so much during Covid and can’t easily pop into shops when they run out.

  • Bulk buys are really fabulous but are only useful if you are going to use all of the bulk products that you have purchased. I know it sounds mundane, but you must ensure that you are going to use all of the goods purchased within a reasonable time before they run out of use-by dates, otherwise these goods become a liability.

  • We used to bulk buy all of the time but had to travel 500km to do that. I’ve noticed that Woolworths have had multi pack buys which have saved us money. Can’t wait to see what else I can save on now. Way to go Woolworths

  • We now have more pets that people in our house so no, don’t need any bulk buys here. If only the pets all ate the same thing I could bulk buy that….LOL. As a couple, the last thing we need is to buy in bulk. Actually, even when we had our daughter and her partner living with us, bulk buys were not really necessary.

  • l love the idea of bulk buying but l also think that Woolworths should stock some of these items for people that can’t buy online or spend $200 as a minimum shop like single mother’s or elderly people 10 items at a time won’t take up much space instore & change them around fortnightly or monthly

  • I shop at Costco and I like bulk buying some things but I wouldnt have the storage for most of this stuff. Prices still seem high.

  • We’re a family of 3 and we just don’t need to Bulk Buy. It becomes about storage and then using things before they go out of date. I can buy a huge bag of rice at Coles that lasts me forever, but often gets in the way in the pantry. Not necessary for me, but thanks.

  • It would depend on the items and the amount of savings I stock up when they have half price sales so it may not be better

  • I buy bulk where I can but with limited storage and freezer space I’m restricted
