Are the running costs for your car eating up a big percentage of the household budget?

The following are some of the easiest ways to save money on your car costs without doing much at all:

Drive in a More Fuel Efficient Way

Saving money on fuel and driving in an environmentally friendly way isn’t very hard to do.

You will find lots of tips for this on the Internet. For example, you could be careful to drive at the most efficient speed for as long as possible.

You could also tidy out any heavy objects that are in the boot and that are adding unnecessary weight to the vehicle.

Even something simple like rolling up the windows to reduce drag or having the right tyre pressure can make your fuel go that little bit further. Some of these ideas might sound a bit silly but they have been proven to help increase fuel efficiency.

In some cases the savings might be very small bit if you add up a few of them it can work out to be a decent amount of money saved.

Find Cheap Fuel with Your Phone

Ok, so no matter how fuel efficient you manage to drive you will still need to fill up now and then.

Driving around for ages looking for the best fuel prices can be a frustrating experience and can also end up costing more money than you eventually save.  A smarter alternative is to use a phone app to help locate the best local fuel prices. You can also do this directly on certain Internet sites if you prefer it that way.

Just saving a little bit every time you fill up is a simple way to cut down your car costs right away and with very little effort.

Get Insurance Quotes Online

If you sometimes complain about the cost of your car insurance then it is probably time to do something about it.

It is now incredibly easy to get a range of quotes from different insurance companies online. You might think that they all charge pretty much the same but once you compare a number of quotes you will find that it could make a big difference.

Saving money in easy ways like this can also give you a great boost and encourage you to look for more money saving ideas in the future.

Learn to Carry out Some Maintenance or Repair Tasks

We all know that car mechanics charge a lot for the work they carry out; so why not do some things ourselves.

There are a great many courses across the country that can give you the skills you need relatively quickly. If that doesn’t suit you then another option is to take an online course on the subject. Yet another option is to get a quick course on DIY car mechanics from a family member or friend who knows about this kind of thing.

It might seem rather daunting at first but there are a lot of simple tasks you could save money on by doing yourself.

If you aren’t too sure about it why not try a simple task or two a try and see how you get on?

This can turn into a fun hobby over time, as well as a way of spending less money on your car. You might even find that friends and relatives ask you to have a look at their cars once they realise that you know a thing or two about the subject.

Use It Less

The final money saving tip is one that we could probably all think about using it from time to time.

Short trips in your car can use a lot of fuel as well as damage the planet.

Of course, choosing to walk or cycle occasionally is also a healthier choice than driving. If you feel that you don’t have the time or energy to this all the time then what about leaving the car at home for just one or two short trips each week?

You will probably feel better after doing this and you are also likely to notice a difference in your overall fuel bill for the period.

  • Some of these I do already, like try to walk to the shops when I don’t have to buy a lot of stuff. It’s good exercise and saves wear and tear and petrol use on the car. I also try and buy insurance online when it’s time to renew each year. But it’s still good to get other tips that I haven’t yet tried. I’ll definitely try and use my mobile to find the cheapest fuel in my area and I never really thought about the way I drive, but it’s definitely one I’ll look into and try and apply. Maybe individually each tip might only save a bit, but put it all together and I’m sure I can on what I’m currently spending for the car. Every little bit helps. As my mother once told me … look after the pennies, and the pounds will take care of themselves!

  • The best tip is using your car less – although that can be difficult in regional areas.

  • What app do you use to find cheaper fuel?

  • Cars a major expense but sometimes most families have multiple cars, with a little bit of communication and negotiation many times this is not needed, sometimes a taxi is cheaper than maintaining a second vehicle, we got rid of one car and whilst it took some adjusting to initially we really have no problems now, and once or twice a year we use a taxi, but this cost pales into insignificance compared to running a second vehicle.

  • Thanks again for sharing; I always haggle with insurance companies and get them to lower their prices. I have saved $100’s by haggling with them.

  • I couldn’t agree more about shopping around for insurance quotes. Loyalty DOES NOT pay off, I save money EVERY year by shopping around for quotes. If you really want to be loyal ask your regular insurer to match your best quote.

  • I actually ride a bike with my kids to their school then catch the bus the rest of the way to work and then catch the bus back to their school in the afternoon and ride home with them again. It’s great bonding time for me and the boys and it’s great exercise for me. We only do this once a week at the moment but I’m hoping to increase it soon. I know I need it.
