A NSW school canteen menu from the ’70s has gone viral after being shared on social media.

Kevin Hayes posted a photo of the old Berala school canteen menu to Facebook this week and it has attracted a lot of attention, with people commenting on how different it is to menus today.

The treats on offer for kids back in 1974 were certainly a LOT different to today’s menu, including doughnuts, cakes, finger buns, custard tarts, chocolate eclairs, Wagon Wheels and apple pies. Even cough lollies were 2 for 1c.

What was your favourite treat from the canteen?

  • Holy moly I can’t even imagine getting a meat pie for 20 cents!!!
    How amazing would that be?!
I loved getting a lunch order every Friday when I was in year 6.
I still remember the days when we had one and two cent coins and one dollar was a note!
It’s so good seeing how different things were back in the day compared to now.

  • I used to love getting a lunch order! What a treat! We had little cartons of frozen orange juice that we would dig away at with a paddle pop stick… it would last us all day!!

  • Never had a school canteen, so I never experienced these joys.

  • Well I’m not that old so zooper doopers may not be a surprising canteen item.

  • I was at primary school in the 70’s and from ’76 in High school, but neither had a school canteen ! Near High school was a stand told sold hot chips, frikandellen and crocetten thought

  • Razz’s and Sunnyboy’s were such a cool treat on hot Summer days!

  • Those were the days ! Really wasn’t an issue that there were all those ‘sometimes ‘ foods on the menu.. because most kids only got to order lunch every so often ( usually when mum ran out of bread )

    • Lunch orders were indeed so very rare and were such a treat.

  • The only food we ever bought from the school canteen was a pie or pastie on Mondays as there was no fresh bread and an icecream in the very hot weather.
Now you can buy a loaf of bread and basic filling to last a week for less than you can buy a basic sandwich for one day. How parents can afford to buy school lunches every day especially if you have 2 or more children is unbelievable. Is it because of luxuries like that which cause both parents to work and one have 2 jobs instead of one

  • Ahhh the old canteen meals. Less healthy canteen meals but kids were probably still eating a lot healthier overall back then
