A Melbourne schoolgirl is critically injured after being hit by a car as she ran across a busy road.

The car hit the 14-year-old as she ran for a bus across Stud Road in Scoresby about 8am on Friday, police say.

She has been flown to the Royal Children’s Hospital with critical head injuries, Ambulance Victoria said.

  • Do hope this girl recovers fully. What happened to the “Look to the right, look to the left, then look to the right again BEFORE you cross the road. It used to be drummed in to us when we were young.

  • I worry about my 15 & 13 year olds having to cross main roads and they have nothing on Stud Rd! Speedy recovery to them!

  • These accidents can happen so easily when people are temporarily distracted, or cars are travelling too fast. I hope this young girl makes a full recovery.

  • Oh no, the dreaded school pick up and drop off. Aged 14, should really have known better. Hoping things aren’t too bad for her

  • A tragic loss of life. My Sympathy to her family, other relatives, school pupils and friends. I have witnessed this happening the past but thankfully nobody being injured or worse still being killed. One stepped off a traffic island in between cars just as they were moving off when the traffic lights changed to green. The pupil was very fortunate that he got suffered a fractured leg that didn’t require surgery. He was close enough that he should have crossed at the traffic lights. The driver went into shock and had to be rushed to hospital. At a shopping centre I know of a small child who let go of his Mother’s hand and ran into the side of a car. A suggestion – hold your child with 2 fingers firmly around their wrist. It won’t hurt unless they try to pull away from you and they can’t suddenly decide not to walk next to you or run off. I have used that method in a crowded area with a child up to 8y.o. who has a habit of not walking with us properly. Not only can they get lost in a crowd, but some environments just aren’t safe because of “undesirable” people in the area.
