It seems like the whole world is caught up in the pie maker craze. I’m not a big pie eater so it took me a while to join the cult. But once I bought my pie maker home, I was absolutely hooked. But it seems that not everyone is as obsessed as I am.
Last weekend, I met up with a friend and I casually mentioned that I had just bought my second pie maker (the Kmart family-sized one) and I launched into a passionate monologue about all the dishes I have tried and still want to try in my new kitchen toy.
I Can’t Stand My Pie Maker!
She was pretty disdainful and shared that she had bought a pie maker a few months ago and now couldn’t stand it. She said she thought it would be time-saving but it landed up taking her far longer to make four pies in the pie maker than it would in the oven. She hated the way the pie maker got so grubby despite all her efforts to keep it clean. And most of all, she just couldn’t understand all these hoards of people cooking four cupcakes at a time in their pie makers when they could make a tray of 12 or 24 so easily in the oven. She just didn’t get the whole pie maker groupie thing.
My friend said her pie maker was gathering dust in the cupboard and in a month or two she’ll probably get rid of it.
There are obviously all kinds of people in this world and I’m of course I’m not that naive to think that everyone would be as in love with their pie maker as I am. But I was genuinely shocked that she didn’t like her pie maker one bit.
It got me thinking whether others actually feel the same way and whether I am just existing in a bubble of pie maker paradise. Well, it looks like there are as many haters of the pie maker as there are lovers.
Not Everyone Loves Their Pie Maker
A post in one of the pie maker groups on facebook confirmed that there were other pie maker critics out there.
“Ok am I the only one that isn’t impressed with the pie maker? No hate please. Just not getting it,” read the BRAVE post.
I absolutely expected for the forum to explode with backlash but comments were actually quite polite and there were even those who agreed with the original poster.
“Yeah I’m not impressed either,” agreed one member.
One commenter totally had the same gripe as my mate about people using the pie maker for cake making.
What’s The Deal With Making Cakes In the Pie Maker?
“Totally get it. I love it for making pie (shock horror I know) but I don’t get the obsession with cooking everything in it. I don’t like making cupcakes in them as I find they dry out.”
“I like making pies in them, and I found they are decent for poached eggs if I want them quick without the effort. I don’t get everything else though…it just seems more time-efficient to do things the traditional way.”
“No hate at all…I love making pies occasionally and sometimes the poached eggs…but for the rest like cakes etc I would prefer to make them the old fashioned way…..way too much mucking around for that stuff.”
It’s Just A Waste Of Time!
Others agreed that the pie maker isn’t great for cooking in bulk:
“Maybe ok for one person but much better to oven cook large batches for families,” said one.
“Yeah, I used it for the first few weeks but when there’s more than a couple of us at home it’s easier to do them in the oven (pastie style) mines been in the cupboard for well over a month without being used.” commented another.
It’s A Passing Fad!
One member suggested that this is “just another craze started by clever advertising. It will all die down soon.”
Yet another agreed:
“You’re not the only one, I get it if you’re someone who made a lot of pies before purchasing it, but I wasn’t one of them so when I got one, I tried a few recipes and its now in the cupboard collecting dust!”
“I think it is a bit of a fad thing. I mean who wants pies every night? I do like mine for pies, but cakes I always bake 24 muffins at once so quicker in the oven . :). I have lots of electrical appliances that I weigh up is it worth the washing or doing it by hand and in the frypan. lol”
“I like mine. But don’t get the hype to be honest. Why cook 4 scrolls at a time when you can cook 20 in the oven and walk away for half an hour???”
“Me. I saw all the cool posts and recipes so went and got one. I’ve used it once and had it 6 months,” admitted one.
Big Love For The Pie Maker
Of course, there were heaps who rushed to the defense of their beloved pie maker:
“Love my pie makers. I now have 5!” said one supporter.
“I would buy it just for how it cooks eggs alone! Love how perfect they come out,” another said.
“I don’t need to use my piemakers all the time but so glad I have them and love them when I do use them.”
I personally love experimenting with my pie maker. It may not be the most efficient way to make cupcakes, but I’ve made the most delicious stuffed mushrooms, healthy doughnuts, chocolate damper, banana muffins and of course delicious flaky pies in my pie maker. So I’m definitely a lover!
