A three-year-old girl has undergone surgery after shooting herself with a replica air pistol.

Police said the incident happened on a property at Ballina, south of Byron Bay, on Tuesday evening.

In a statement released to media on Wednesday afternoon, police said the toddler was staying at the North Creek Road property when she found an unsecured replica air pistol, or BB gun, at around 7pm.

“The three-year-old girl allegedly discharged the weapon, shooting herself in the leg,” police said in the statement.

A 39-year-old man drove the child to Ballina District Hospital, where she has since undergone surgery to remove the projectile from her leg.

Fortunately, she escaped serious injury and is now recovering in a stable condition.

Police were called to the hospital where they interviewed the 39-year-old man, believed to be the girl’s father, and seized the replica pistol.

Detectives are now investigating the matter and say charges are expected to be laid.

We really hope she is OK!

  • Very shocking indeed !! Glad the girl wasn’t more serious or deadly injured ! Hope she recovers well and that the person who owned thin gun is taking this very very serious.

  • Indeed. A gun should be stored securely and not left around the property, loaded, where a kid can reach it.

  • This is just so terrible. How on earth does something like this happen? The owners of the gun are incredibly irresponsible.

  • Dreadful. The sort of story I’d expect from America, not here.

  • This could have been so much worse. How the heck does a 3 year old end up with a gun?? so much irresponsibility

  • It is illegal to not lock up a firearm when it’s not being used. The ammunition is not supposed to be stored together with the firearms either.

  • How on earth can something like this happen in Australia?!?! Not only the gun being left within reach of a 3 yo, but also the 3 yo being left unattended for long enough to be able to find it and shoot herself!
