You might not have one like Carrie “Sex in the City” Bradshaw’s stunning walk-though robe, but lots of what’s already in your own cupboards and drawers can be maternity wear.

Around the end of trimester one or at the beginning of T2, there’s no hiding the fact that you have a growing baby bump.

But before rushing out to buy armfuls of maternity gear, your own wardrobe offers lots to clothe your budding belly.

The secret is being able to find them! And a maternity spring clean, no matter what the season, is the way to go. Here’s how:

Pull everything out drawer-by-drawer and shelf-by-shelf. Try it all on and sort into two piles:

  1. It fits now and there’s a little room to expand into
  2. There’s no way can I squeeze into that!

Coats, cardigans, jackets instantly go into pile number one as do any stretchy jersey skirts or trousers.

When it comes to dresses, stretch or that wrap ones might still fit. Maxi dresses are a blessing as they can generally be worn right to the end of pregnancy (and beyond).

Tops can be a bit more tricky – stretchy T’s are good, but the bigger your get, the more likely they are to ride up. When this happens move them to the AB (After Baby) pile.

Once you’re sorted, items from the first pile go back in your wardrobe, shelves or drawers grouped together so that when you’re in a hurry after sleeping-in they’re super easy to find.

Take it one step further if you’re a bit OCD and arrange by colours or lengths, grouping skirts, trousers, tops and dresses together – just like the merchandising at your favourite boutique.

Your “old” wardrobe now looks like a whole new collection of clothes ready to wear with your lady bump during T2.

  • I only ever wore tracky dacks and t shirts. I had very limited maternity wear, a dress, a pair of overalls, 2 pairs of trousers and a jumper my mum bought.
