Hello!

The Aldi snow gear sale must be the most popular special buy day of the year! But this year, ski and snowboard enthusiasts are going to be disappointed as the discount retailer has announced that it will be withdrawing its 2020 Snow Gear Special Buys.

In years gone by, snow lovers would line up outside their Aldi from the early hours of the morning to get their paws on rockbottom-priced snow gear. Many shoppers even planned out their snow gear shop with strategic precision – knowing exactly how many jackets, boots and gloves they will grab.

But the hoards will be gutted this year as Aldi has announced that given the COVID-19 circumstances, it has decided to scrap this year’s Snow Gear offers.

Priorities

The retailer made the following announcement on their facebook page:

“As we are prioritising the transport and distribution of our groceries, and due to recent travel restrictions, our 2020 Snow Gear Special Buys will not be available as planned.”

My first thought was that the shop has opted to postpone the sale and that the snow gear would appear on the shelves later than usual. But NO! I was shocked to discover that Aldi was cancelling the snow gear sale altogether.

“We look forward to sharing our best-ever collection with you in 2021. Apologies for any inconvenience caused,” the Aldi message read.

Bye-bye Special Buys

It has become an expected occurrence that Aldi’s special buys are absent most weeks. A few days ago, a group of mums and I were lining up to get hold of the coveted kids’ craft and stationery. But our early bird efforts were thwarted as the manager announced that the Special Buys would not be making an appearance. Blah!

Will Anyone Be Able To Ski This Year?

No-one really knows what is going to happen on the snowfields this year. The way it stands now, the resorts may not even open for business until well into the season, or not at all. So perhaps Aldi figured their snow gear sale wouldn’t be as popular as previous years so it was more strategic to cancel the product order than suffer a downturn in purchases.

It’s A Fight For The Last Fleecy Glove

Another reason is that the Aldi snow sale is famous for being a bit of a bun fight. So to maintain any social distancing during a snow gear sale would be impossible.

“I reckon this would have alot to do with the way people go feral over the snow gear rather than just a supply and demand issue. They would have a logistical nightmare with social distancing the way people carry on over this stuff”, suggests one shopper.

Mixed Reactions

While some Aldi shoppers were understanding of the retailer’s predicament, many shoppers were fuming at this decision, especially those who live in the colder regions of our country.

One comment read: “Pity about the people who actually live in a cold climate and buy this as their winter clothing!!!! Disappointed Aldi. Maybe you should bring stock out in the areas that do need it and put out extra from the areas who don’t need it to avoid the rush buying?!!?”

“Bugger. That was handy for those of us who live where it snows,” said another.

“Winter is still coming – would be great if they still brought out the thermals, boots, gloves, & beanies.”

Oh well, just another thing to add to our list of COVID-19 casualties.

  • I have heard that so many people live for this sale each year.

  • I don’t think it’s such a big deal.

  • I think it’s a fair call. There aren’t many people who would be needing snow gear this year as we can’t travel to the ski slopes so I understand it

  • I think it’s a good idea as the crowds are too risky

  • Other stores sell snow gear. If you really think this is an essential item you can buy it elsewhere.

  • This hasn’t affected me as we dont have any holidays planned. Aldi are clever. They would have a very good reason behind this. With travel restrictions in place they are going to have a bigger turn over with items to be used around the home.

  • Not sure that anybody is going to be going skiing anytime soon anyway!

  • I don’t go skiing either but there gloves are so good

  • It doesn’t affect me anyway as I don’t go skiing, don’t live in a really cold area and, most of all, I don’t live within 5 hours of an Aldi store. Since they’ve opened I’ve heard a lot of negative stories about them and their advertised specials so I know I’m not missing out on anything special.

  • I hate the snow anyway. Lived with too much of it for far too long growing up in Canada.

  • Not fussed. We don’t ski or go to the snow so it doesn’t effect me at all.
