A British baby furniture company has created the world’s first cot with an iPad – prompting an backlash from experts and parents.

Gary Taylor, owner of Birmingham-based furniture company Babeek, designed the cot after he had trouble putting his nine-month-old baby to sleep.

According to Mr Taylor, he included the iPad in the crib so he could play his young daughter white noise to help her nod off, shares Daily Mail.

But parents have slammed the ‘ridiculous’ creation, claiming the smart cot was a way for lazy mothers and fathers to occupy their children.

Creator Mr Taylor, who lives in Birmingham, explained how the iPad could be used as a way for parents to make life easier for themselves.

He said: ‘For me, it’s about getting our child to sleep.’

Child psychologist Dr Andy Allen also criticised the creation.

He said: ‘Given the available literature surrounding screens and sleep and that of early attachment, creating a cot with a built in iPad is simply outrageous.

‘Whilst it could be argued that it could be used as a nightlight, to play soothing melodies or be a means for a parent to keep their eye on their child.

‘It won’t be long before apps are developed simply to occupy a baby or child.

‘Cots are a safe place for sleeping and resting – period.’

Mr Taylor defended the placement of the iPad and said that only lazy parents would even think of leaving their child in a cot for longer than half an hour.

‘It’s not to sit your child in the cot all day watching Peppa Pig. That’s not the idea.

‘People who work for a living thought it was a great idea. Without me being nasty, people who would leave their kid in the front room all day were hammering it.’

He said he is simply selling a product parents want.

‘People are saying it’s an early start but that is just the modern day. Sorry to say it. I don’t see any kids playing outside any more.

‘Kids are stuck on their computers. That’s not my fault. That’s the way the generation is going. I’m giving people what they want.’

  • No electronic devices in the bedrooms at our house.

  • I would never be putting any electronic device in my kids cot. What happened to a good old fashioned mobile

  • Oh dear! Don’t think this is a good idea. But people probably already stick ipads on the cot somehow already anyway!

  • No no no! So wrong on so many levels. There’s no reason at all why babies would need this in their cot

  • If parents are stupid enough to buy it, why shouldn’t he be smart enough to make money? I think it is a horrible product but I have seen people setting phones up with “educational” shows for their baby (the youngest being 3 days old) so I know that this will be used for babysitting babies. As for not seeing kids outside, my 2 year old plays outside every day. I call it parenting.

  • I think this man is right. There are plenty of products that are misused or have the potential to be. He stated why he’s created the cot and even though there are already white noise makers and nightlights this is what has worked for him so he’s shared it in the hopes of helping others. I personally wouldn’t use it, but I don’t think he created it for lazy parents to leave their child in the cot all day.

  • Not a fan. A cot is for sleep not playing with an iPad.

  • This is completely changing the purpose of a cot. Personally I don’t think any baby need an iPad!

  • Fantastic cot every child needs a safe reliable cot and British Company have come up with the perfect solution. The iPad is the cream on the top of this wonderful design as one could sit with a baby whilst they slowly drift off to sleep listening to the lullaby of choice.

  • How to create little addicts !! Since when does a baby need an iPad ?

  • That is just awful. I wouldn’t even have a tv in my own room…

  • To my mind cots are to sleep in, not to play in. I think it is disgusting.

  • Other moms have summed this device up pretty well. And I also agree it’s not something I would try.

  • I don’t like the idea. I can imagine the arguments from the older kids saying but he gets to play all the time. It’s hard enough to limit their time when their older without starting them that young.

  • What about if hackers tap into the camera on the iPad? If it was a iPad which had a cover for the camera and could be removed for multipurpose play and it could be locked into a function say a sleep white noise mode then it could be appealing although children are learning to use technology too young

    • You have some interesting questions. The cot and device come with to many questions and unknowns for my liking.
