Nine year old special needs boy spent the day locked inside a school bus after he missed his school drop-off.

The boy failed to get off the bus at Peterborough School in Warilla on Thursday morning, and apparently went totally unnoticed by the driver as he returned to the depot, reports SMH.

The driver has since been stood down, pending the results of an internal investigation.

The boy was left on the bus for more than six hours until the afternoon school runs, shortly before 3pm. He was then driven back to the school, where staff called for an ambulance.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Geoff Senior said the boy was found in good health and did not require hospitalisation.

“The school was made aware that one of their students had been locked in a bus at a depot today after the transport company found the child and delivered him to the school this afternoon,”a spokeswoman said, in a statement issued Thursday evening.

“The Assisted School Travel Program and Employee Performance and Conduct Unit have launched an investigation into the matter and the actions of the contractor.

“The driver in question has been stood down pending an investigation.”

I don’t understand how the school would not have inquired about the child when he wasn’t in class?

  • maybe he fell asleep in the bus? poor kid though because that would have been scary.

  • Think the driver made the mistake indeed not to check the bus. That the school didn’t enquire about his absence could be because they thought he was sick. I don’t phone the school when my child is sick. I keep him/her at home and give a sick note/explanation when my child returns to school.

  • This would have been distressing for the young boy.

  • The bus driver has to check that all children are off the bus before leaving the school.
What concerns me is taht the school didn’t check why the child was not at school.

  • Being a school bus the driver should make sure all the kids have got off.
Hopefully the boy had plenty to eat and drink…..and the bus was in dense shade. If the boy live out on a farm his parents may have been out in the paddocks and not heard a phone, especially of they were suing motorised equipment.

  • The driver should have checked the bus at the end of the route!
