Hello!

This term I started working after having 12 years at home with my children. It has taken some getting used to and I’m still fine tuning the change in our lives. Because I only work at that job 4 days a week the other day is referred to by everyone as my “day off” .

Most weeks my “day off” is spent with half a day voluntary work at my children’s school, followed by the usual catch up on housework. This week I switched days in order to get to a specialist appointment early in the morning. Not only did I get up early and run around getting the kids ready for school, but one of them woke up and cried about having a really sore neck from sleeping the wrong way and the other one has had a really bad cough. I got that one to school and told the other one to come with me. Got to the specialist, shopped for a couple of items, came home did housework, checked e-mails, had breakfast, made phone calls and went to have lunch with my friend taking my daughter with me. This was interrupted with a phone call from the school to get my son, being told by the office lady not to tell my kids they can come home if they’re not feeling well (which I didn’t), being told off by my husband for having my friend answer the phone while I was driving to the school, making another doctor’s appointmnet for my son (I’m due for my pap smear and have an afternoon appointment), having the kids argue in the car on the way home and its only 2.30pm!!!

If this is my “day off” I think I’ll keep working!

  • I get it, same thing happened to me when I decided to go part time, people I worked with had some sort of idea that on my days off I did nothing.

  • I thought you had described your day and you were only up to lunch time! Then there was more!

  • There are no days off once you become a parent but would any of us change to be childless if given the choice. I wouldn’t.

  • Yep, sometimes I wonder if going to work would be easier.

  • Likewise! I work ‘only’ 3 days as a teacher and between that and my ‘days off’ w Miss 2 and all of her activities and demands…I am exhausted!!

  • Haha that sounds exactly like my days off. I think its a relief to go to work!
