Hello!

We’ve recently moved house and unfortunately it’s not a fenced property. It’s also a street notorious for hoons. We were moving furniture inside – I was looking after our youngest (then 3 months old) inside while our oldest was outside being looked after (or so I thought) by a family member and playing in the van. All of a sudden I hear screaming and I run out of the house to find our daughter out on the road. Thanks to my husband’s quick reaction time and the vigilant driver our daughter was not hit and is okay. But it was the most heart stopping moment of my life.

Even though I know how quick she is, that the family member felt bad about what happened and the fact nothing did happen and everyone was okay, I’m still struggling to trust them with our children. I put my trust in that person to look after our child and to be vigilant. I’ve always had trouble letting other people look after them and now even more so. All I know is that my husband and I know our daughter, know her personality and know how to keep her safe. It’s going to take a lot to let go again and something I have to work proactively on.

  • oh my gosh at least she was ok but i know that you just beat yourself up and go over the “what if’s”.

  • This must have been terrible for you, however things do happen even with the most vigilant of parents and people entrusted to look after children – pleased your child wasn’t hurt.

  • I can only imagone how terrifying that was, thank you for sharing to help others

  • Thank goodness she was ok and I think it is only fair that trust needs to be rebuilt.

  • omg how lucky for your little one. The only people my kids have ever been left with is my parents as I know they would always be safe

  • I am so glad it turned out ok. I can understand how your feeling I would not have the trust in them anymore either.

  • that would be enough to scare the living daylights out of any parent but I am so glad it had a happy ending

  • It can be very distressing even when nothing bad has happened and will be a long journey for you to’let go’ and trust this person or any other person with your child again. Good luck!

  • Thank god all ok! I can relate to not trusting others. I, too, know exactly what she can do, and how quick she can move, and I have a habit of always imagining the worst.

  • I think most parents are the same I know I am,
When my son was a baby and if we had to go out I would always go through things in my mind that could possibly go wrong and try and tell the babysitter what to do if this happens or that happens.
Nothing ever did go wrong but I think it’s just a mum thing.

  • I would feel the same way. It takes a lot for me to trust the care of my children with someone else.

  • I had a similar incident with my 1 year old son. I knew he was quick, but it only took a second for him to get a head start on me and crawl under a fence I couldn’t negotiate and he was out on a road. I don’t know the whole story, but try to forgive your family member. You’re right to be unsure, but I’m sure that the guilt that they feel will ensure that there will never be a repeat incident (my son never got away from me again).

  • I completely understand where you are coming from. I’m a bit the same. I had an incident something like this happen when my son first started school. He had decided he was going to go outside of the school gate and crossed the road up ahead of the crossing. Very, very scary.
