Hello!

So much for living in a quiet cul-de-sac in a quiet suburb! On a Monday night 2 weeks ago, we were woken by the police HAMMERING on our front door at 3.30a.m.

Hubby got up to talk to them, and when he took them through the house out the back, I got up to see what was going on. It turned out our neighbours had had a break-in. I’d been up at around 1.30 and heard a dog barking madly a few houses over, and didn’t think much of it.

Hubby and I were both surprised as the house is at the end of the cul-de-sac and surrounded by neighbours beside and behind it – so an unusual target if you don’t want to be spotted!

There were quite a few police in the street for hours afterwards, and both hubby and I thought it was a bit unusual. The next day our neighbours moved out very suddenly (they mostly kept to themselves but we’d heard a couple of worrying things over the years so kept our distance too).

Anyway, long story short, another neighbour asked the police what was going on this week, and they tried to “reassure” him saying it was a “targeted attack”! I think it was supposed to be reassuring but I haven’t slept well since! I’ve lived alone before and often have night’s alone with the kids when hubby is away, and have always felt pretty secure here.

It’s horrible that that has been taken away now. It’s also frustrating not knowing the full story – I know it’s not really my business, but being woken like than and left to wonder hasn’t helped my nerves!

I hope the new neighbours are lovely!

  • This is my post and we heard afterwards there were drugs involved! We had our big tent up in the backyard the kids had been sleeping in (but not that night) and I got the police to check it – I think the constable thought I was mad but no way I could have slept not knowing if they were hiding in there! We’ve had 3 neighbours since (it’s a rental) and all have been better – thankfully!

  • I think your new neighbours are going to be somehow better than your previous ones by the sound of things.

  • A sudden departure and a targeted attack don’t sound very reassuring.

  • We’ve had similar experiences and things do go back to normal. We now have great neighbours which is a good thing to come out of a bit of a scary experience.

  • Our neighbours were being raided as we had a lovely Mothers day lunch with Mum and Nan one year. Luckily they moved out not long after!

  • Unfortunately, there are so many people today who have an overblown sense of entitlement. They feel that they ‘deserve’ or are ‘owed’ things from society, and if they are not given those things on a plate, then they have no qualms whatsoever in taking it from someone else.
I know that there has always been theft, and that there will always be someone out there who would rather take the ‘easy’ way in obtaining goods (even though it isn’t legal or moral), but I really hope that this sense of entitlement that has begun to pervade our society is one that will not last – perhaps if it disappears, the number of thefts will decrease.
I hope that your new neighbours are lovely, and that your quiet little cul-de-sac will return to its lovely sleepy self. Please try not to let this one horrible incident destroy your happy house, but at the same time, make sure that your house, yard and car(s) are all secure and locked!
