Hello!

I moved to Australia with my ex husband 6 years ago. We started off in a small mining town in WA and moved to Queensland where I had my son followed 21 months later by my daughter. To say I didn’t find it difficult coping with two small children without family support and an Engineer husband on a fly in fly out roster, would be an understatement. My son was always a challenging child and the demands of a newborn and difficult toddler started to take its toll on my marriage. I was diagnosed with early menopause at the age of 38 which had a huge impact on my relationship. My husband and I stopped talking and grew apart so that by the time my daughter was rushed to hospital at the age of 17 months with a diagnosis of Ketoacidosis and Type 1 Diabetes, we were strangers to each other. Four months later, my husband left because in his words ‘he really liked a 27 year old girl in his office and he just couldn’t help it’. My world crumbled and I experienced some of the darkest days of my life. Today, 12 months after he left and 16 months after my daughters diagnosis, I am a different person. I am amazed daily by my daughter’s resilience to a demanding disease that she will live with for the rest of her life. I am grateful for the little things and positive that my little family of 3 will be just fine :)

  • You don’t need your ex in your life to ruin yours and your childrens’ lives.
You will be strong for your children. I hope you have community support groups you can join to learn and share information on various issues including your little girl’s medical issues. Hopefully you also have supportive friends and don’t feel isolated.

  • Well done for your daughter. It is a tough condition to live with, and I have the utmost respect for parents who have small children deal with it.
My daughter was 13 when she was diagnosed and has done everything herself except for the carb counting which I help with.
It’s tough but stay strong and reach out for help. There are some wonderful groups like JDRF that can get you support.
    Thanks for your story.
