Hello!

I was induced into labour with my first born, who was 14 days late, so I wasnt sure what going into spontaneous labour was like. When my husband and I were expecting our second child, we just expected her to be that late too. It tends to run in the family. Two days after the estimated due date, I was laying awake in bed in the wee hours of the morning and I thought “hm…Could this be labour?” It was so mild, that I went back to sleep and woke again at 5am and shook my husband. “Baby’s coming today” I whispered. He just laughed and rolled over, disbelievingly. “No, really” I said “I’m totally in labour right now.”

He sat bolt upright in bed and rubbed his eyes. “WHAT?” He called his mother who was to babysit our son, but assured her that there was no rush, it was all in the early stages. She said she’d be around at 8am.

I started watching the clock and the contractions started getting closer and closer. It was 7 am by now and I thought I’d have a shower, as the pain was increasing. But I thought I was hours and hours away from giving birth, and this really wasnt so bad.

When I stepped out of that hot shower it hit me. The pain was bad! We had to go! My husband wanted to call his mother but I somehow managed to tell him we had to go now! there was no time. We ended up taking our son with us, and speeding towards the hospital, passing a police car on the way, and somehow arriving in 10 minutes rather than 25. Hubby parked outside the hospital. By this time I couldnt speak and my waters broke as I was trying to get out of the car. Hubby ran in and brought me a wheelchair. I could feel the baby’s head! I sat down in that chair and looked at a long ramp ahead of me up to the hospital. I started wheeling, my husband went back to the car to get our son. So here I was, wheeling myself up a ginormous ramp towards the hospital, the baby’s head out and I was screaming!

A man even passed me on the ramp and didn’t come near me. I just made it into the birthing suite in time, and bub immediately came out. It was 7.30 am and I was holding my new daughter. Do yourself a favour and never wait as long as I did! Who knows how quickly your baby is going to be born!

Post your story
  • If you have another baby I bet you don’t roll over and go back to sleep !!!!
A friend of mine had 4 babies. Each one after the first one the labour was longer, not shorter.

  • I was exactly the same! Induced for first baby then having such a mild start to my second labour, I had to wonder if it really was labour. It was!
